May 9, 2025 - Are you dealing with poopy nest boxes?! I can tell you it’s the worst when there’s chicken poop in the nesting area because that means poopy eggs too!...
7.8K views · 1K reactions | Are you dealing with poopy nest boxes?! I can tell you it’s the worst when there’s chicken poop in the nesting area because that means poopy eggs too! Now, if you have messy boxes, chances are your chickens are having sleepovers in there! 😴While chickens sleep they tend to drop quite a bit of poop. Once chickens learn the bad habit of sleeping in the nest boxes rather than roosting (like they should) it’s a hard habit to break! ➡️Now the best solution to this problem is simply blocking off the nesting boxes at night. This will force those naughty hens out of there and encourage them to roost. There are a few different ways you can do this: ➡️Build a drop down door that can be closed at night and opened in the day (like the one we built in the video) ➡️Have a piece of wood that can slide down to cover the opening ➡️ Tack up a piece of cardboard or even empty feed bags to cover the opening We might start adding this feature to our coops in the future! If you can avoid your flock picking up any bad habits from the get go, win win! 🐣 Chick tip: When you move your chicks to the coop, block off the nesting area right away. This will encourage the chicks to not even *think* about sleeping in the boxes. Don’t open the boxes until your chickens are getting close to laying age. If you find some still aren’t wanting to roost on the roosting bars at night, wait until it’s dark and go out and place any chickens that are sleeping on the ground up on the bars. This easy, inexpensive PVC pipe idea is an absolute game changer!

1. Prevents hens from getting out while feeding them.
2. Allows me to feed them without going in the coop and getting dirty.
3. If we fill to the top, it lasts our chickens a whole week, and I don’t have to worry about feeding them everyday.
4. Reduces feed waste, saving money and keeping your coop tidy.
10/10 recommend!!!

97K views · 1.6K reactions | ❄️Keep your flock safe this winter with these steps! Winters can get pretty brutal here in Minnesota, but with a few essential winterizing steps, chickens can thrive even in the harshest conditions! Here’s what I recommend for winterizing your coop: ❄️Add insulation (we’re using 1.5” styrofoam board covered with 1/8” panel board) ❄️Cover large windows with polycarbonate (it creates a wonderful greenhouse effect!) ❄️Add ventilation holes (placed as high as possible to let moisture escape) ❄️Keep the waterers OUTSIDE the coop (moisture = frostbite) ❄️Add a Chickcozy Smart Coop Heater (for when it hits -20F! I don’t recommend routinely heating the coop.) There are a lot of radiant heaters on the market and I chose Chickcozy because: 🔥It’s a safe heat source (no more heat lamps!) 🔥Easy to install and is energy efficient 🔥Has a built-in smart temperature sensor that ensures real-time adjustments as the outside temperature changes 🔥Adjustable temperature from 70 to 190 degrees 🔥Doubles as a brooder heat plate for chicks in the spring I know you’re going to want one because winter is right around the corner! 80K views · 13K reactions | {Part 1 of a series} I’ve been using riverbank sand in my coop for almost 3 years and I love it more every year. This is not play sand, but a medium course grade sand with small gravel in it. It may be called construction sand or washed sand and we get it at a local gravel company for $50 a front loader scoop! Something a lot of people don’t know is that sand actually has a high thermal mass as long as it stays dry. If it is in an area that gets wet in the winter it can freeze. A group of researcers at Auburn University found that sand keeps coops cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter as long as they are in a protected, covered area. In inclement weather, sand inside the coop is dry and dust-bath-ready for chickens. Sand is heavier than shavings or straw so you will need to ensure that you have a strong floor underneath. I do not recommend putting sand inside a coop that has a dirt floor though because it will create moisture. Because a sandy coop is a cleaner coop, especially if you’re scooping out poop daily or at least weekly, sand litter contains lower levels of bacteria counts. Chickens in a sand coop should also have less exposure to other pathogens, like Coccidiosis and less exposure to parasites, such as worms. This is simply because your coop will have less wet poop in it, and because sand is inorganic and is not constantly breaking down. You remove much of the poop through scooping, and the poop that’s still left in the coop is dried out. The lower bacteria levels in sand bedding/litter may be due to sand’s inorganic nature. Sand contains very few nutrients to support bacterial growth. Sand may also not have the binding sites necessary for bacterial growth that other substrates have. To be clear, sand does not absorb moisture as well as straw and shavings, but it doesn’t hold moisture the same way organic litter does, and because of this, you don’t need to worry as much about mold or ammonia. Sand dries the poop quickly and releases the moisture quickly, unlike organic litter making it easier to remove. I have a sand highlight with more information if you care to look. Let me know if you have questions♥️ #chickencoops #backyardhens | 𝐆𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 | 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬
