A few months ago, G was in Seattle on business and stayed in a hotel near the Seattle Public Library. Otherwise it would have never been on our radar as a place to visit in Seattle. The 11 story building opened in 2004 and can hold nearly 1.5 million books. The children's section alone is as big as our local library. Building Integration - Project 6.0 - Seattle Public Library - Ben Larsen - Free download as PDF File (.pdf) or read online for free. Architects conceived the new Central Library building as a celebration of books. They also worked to make the library inviting to the public, rather than stuffy. New functions include automatic book sorting and conveyance, self-checkout for patrons, and over 400 public computer terminals.

Though they are losing ground to the e-book and the audiobook, public libraries were once central hubs of human intellectual progress.
