What Is Lined Paper?

Lined paper is a type of writing paper that contains horizontal lines that are used as a guides for a more legible and consistent writing. In the United States the three most common standard formats are: college ruled, wide ruled paper and narrow ruled paper.

• College ruled paper is the most popular format and being heavily used by university and college students. The spacing between the lines is 9/32 inches this being the reason why it’s also referred to as medium ruled paper.

• Wide ruled paper is commonly used by kids in grade school because it has a more generous line spacing which helps beginners with their handwriting. The space between the lines is 11/32 inches.

• Narrow ruled paper is usually proffered by those who want to fit more text on the page, but still like to keep the structure that line paper offers. For this format, the spacing between the lines is 1/4 inches.
