The world some of come from are different than most. In fundamentalist religions some grow up in, there are laws for everything—what to eat, what to wear, how to live, even when and how to have sex. In that world, most choices were made for you.
This song was born from witnessing the ways those rules reached into marriage.
The verses carry that weight—the control, the shame, the bending of oneself to fit impossible expectations. The chorus is about the dissociation—going somewhere else to survive what feels unbearable.
This song is deeply personal, knowing what it’s like to escape inside of yourself, to leave her body because staying felt like too much.
