The Reds, Pinks & Purples invoke a very particular moment of the post-C86/Sarah Records outpost of “college rock” before grunge became the de facto form of “alt rock”. This is pop music like they don’t really make it anymore: Catchy, gloomy, literate, jangly, artsy, occasionally frivolous… like some half-remembered video from the Dave Kendall-era of 120 Minutes. Personally, this is my favorite Grouper album. The lofi sound of this record is amazing and it gives off that melancholic, ethereal, and somewhat depressive feel to it. That kind of album you listen to either when it's a cold early morning or when it's a freezing moonlit night. Love this album so much. The Laughing Stock
