about

Whilst at Duckon one year, I happened to be in a filk circle with Chas Somdahl, who started playing the original version of this song. Having my accordion handy, I naturally joined in. It became a regular thing on those rare occasions we are at cons together. So blame him. And, of course, the thought of "Well, we can't let this one pass by..." reared its ugly head, and here you are...

lyrics

A Whiter Shade of Pale
lyrics: Gary Hanak
composer: Gary Brooker / Matthew Reid
original lyrics: Keith Reid
Key: G

We skipped no one in the circle
Some were witty, some did boar
It was late, we all were giddy
But everyone still wanted more
Till we came to this old fellow
Who then, much to our dismay
Calmly strapped on his accordion
And then began to play

And so it was that evening
As the filker played his scales
That our faces, once just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale

(instrumental)

He said "It's been a while now
Since the last time that I played
And I thank you all for being here
And I'm glad you all have stayed"
Those of us who were still conscious
Tried to tell him "let it be"
But he took it as a request
And played a Beatles melody

And so it was that evening
As the filker played his scales
That our faces, once just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale

(instrumental)

We said "There is no reason
For you to wear that all night long"
But he said "Hey, it's not that heavy"
And tried to start another song
That's when sixteen Con Filk virgins,
Hoarse screams coming from their lips,
Leapt upon him, grabbed his squeezebox,
And tore it into little bits...

And so it was that evening
As the filker played his scales
That our faces, once just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale
