One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, it was constructed to celebrate the successful defence of Rhodes city against an attack by Demetrius Poliorcetes, who had besieged it for a year with a large army and navy. According to most contemporary descriptions, the Colossus stood approximately 70 cubits, or 33 m (108 ft) high making it the tallest statue in the ancient world. The Balaton is a freshwater lake in the Transdanubian region of Hungary. It is the largest lake in Central Europe, and one of the region's foremost tourist destinations. The Zala River provides the largest inflow of water to the lake, and the canalized Sió is the only outflow. On the hill that forms the Tihany peninsula, on the north shore of the lake, is the town of the same name (1,369 inhabitants in 2015), in the center of which stands a Benedictine abbey founded in 1055 (rebuilt in the style Baroque in 1754) by King Andrew I of Hungary, who is buried in his crypt: the founding act contains the first words that are preserved in the Hungarian language.

Esperanto, an international planned language conceived in the second half of the 19th century by the Polish ophthalmologist Ludwik Łazarz Zamenhof, who laid out its foundations in 1887, spread rapidly throughout Europe and the world, and on August 9, 1905 the so-called Declaration of Boulogne it unofficially established it as a universal alternative language. Hungary was one of the first countries to welcome this language, and already in 1902 the Association of Hungarian Esperantists (Hungaria Esperanto-Asocio; Magyar Eszperantisták Egylete) was created, which later had different names; when the congress commemorated by this stamp was held in 1962, the Hungarian Esperanto Association (Magyar Eszperantó Szövetség, 1960-1991) was in force.

Lake Balaton is a freshwater lake in the Transdanubian region of Hungary. It is the largest lake in Central Europe, and one of the region's foremost tourist destinations. The Zala River provides the largest inflow of water to the lake, and the canalised Sió is the only outflow. The mountainous region of the northern shore is known both for its historic character and as a major wine region, while the flat southern shore is known for its resort towns. Balatonfüred, Hévíz and Siófok developed early as resorts for the wealthy, but it was not until the late 19th century when landowners, ruined by Phylloxera attacking their grape vines, began building summer homes to rent out to the burgeoning middle classes. The construction of railways in 1861 and 1909 increased tourism substantially, but the post-war boom of the 1950s was much larger. Sármellék International Airport provides air service to Balaton (although most service is only seasonal).

The European Danube Commission, made up of seven countries bordering the river, was established in Belgrade by the Danube River Conference, in 1948. It replaced previous commissions: the first European Danube Commission was established by the Treaty of Paris in 1856, which ended the Crimean War. Currently (2020) it has eleven member states (Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia and Ukraine) and others with observer status (Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Georgia, Greece, Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia and Turkey). It is based in Budapest and its official languages are French, German and Russian. The objective of the Commission is to jointly regulate maritime transport on the Danube.
