Microsoft PowerToys version

0.84.1

Installation method

WinGet

Running as admin

No

Area(s) with issue?

File Locksmith, PowerRename

Steps to reproduce

Options for Power Rename and File Locksmith appear twice in the File Explorer extended context menu. And not next to each other as would be expected.

✔️ Expected Behavior

The options should appear once, next to each other.

❌ Actual Behavior

The options appear twice, once near the start with Notepad in between them, and again further down with Share in between.

Issue still present for me in v0.85.0. Not an issue in the default context menu from my experience, only in the extended menu.

You need to choose Extended context menu only option on File Locksmith settings, you can then access it by holding shift and pressing right mouse button on a file/folder. There's no way of keeping only one option with Default and extended context menu option enabled, because legacy and modern context menu share common registry keys and cannot be seperated from each other.

If I'm reading this right, the issue is caused by them appearing once on the extended menu from a general context menu registry entry and once again from a specific extended context menu registry entry? If that's the case, shouldn't the extended registry entry be disabled when set to show in both menus, so it just has the one for both of them?

In theory yes, in practice - it's Microsoft, they don't care about legacy context menu anymore.

Update: Just updated to Windows 11 24H2 from 23H2 and the issue seems to have vanished. I'd updated to PowerToys 0.85.1 before updating to 24H2 and the issue was still present, but once I updated my OS the issue went away. Would be interesting to hear whether others have had the same experience.
