While some of us have been wrapping up the financial year, and enjoying vacation time, others have been hard at work shipping open source projects and releases. These projects include everything from world-changing technology to developer tooling, and weekend hobbies. Here are some of the open source projects that released major version updates this July. Check out these projects, and maybe even think about using or contributing to them.
The open source community is awesome, and what’s even more awesome is communities within communities. The SpaceVim community exists to drive Vim distribution. It started as a spin-off from the DotFiles repository in 2016. Now it’s a space that manages collections of plugins in layers, in order to collect related plugins together to provide features. The new version includes lots of new layers, a support for Gitter and IRC on the chat layer, new key bindings, some new enhancements, and more. Read all about the changes on the SpaceVim website.

We featured NestJS in our 2021 mid-year Release Radar. Seems like NestJS has a habit of releasing a new update in July because now they’re here with version nine. It’s a Node.js framework for building efficient, reliable and scalable server-side applications. This new major release covers the whole platform and has a bunch of new updates, even including the CLI and documentation. Some of the key features include REPL (short for read-eval-print loop), which is an interactive new environment allowing you to inspect your dependency graph. There’s also a configuration module builder, durable providers, and lots more. Check out all the NestJS updates on the Trilon blog and read how to migrate from version eight.
In case you missed it, we just released the v9!

How annoying is it when you don’t have the correct image type for your needs? “Oh sorry, this needs to be a *json file, not an *.svg”. Those days are over with SVGPS. This useful app converts icon files into a single *.json file that’s ready to use on your frontend or mobile project. All you need to do is import the icons, and SVGPS will take care of the rest. You can rename files, as well as add and remove icons. Congrats to the team on shipping out the first major release 🥳.
Mmmm pie, oh sorry, not that kind of pie 🥧. It’s this kind of π, Sonic Pi. It’s a new type of instrument that allows you to make music from coding. Remember those live music coding extraordinaires from GitHub Universe? If you don’t, watch the video on our YouTube channel. Now you don’t have to be jealous of those coders, because you can make music too. There’s classical, jazz, grime, and even EDM. The latest update comes with lots of cool features so you can change the music and tempo on the fly. Check out all the improvements and read more about the new global metronome in the Sonic Pi release notes.
GitHub has a CLI, and now you can use Jira on the command line too. JiraCLI allows users to interactively use Jira from the terminal. It’s available on macOS, Linux, and Windows. If you’re looking to run JiraCLI inside a Docker container, there’s a Docker image available. Have your Jira API token handy, and you’re ready to start.
You want more graphs? You got it! EdgeDB is quickly becoming one of the most loved graph-relational databases since it shipped version 1.0 in February this year. This new update brings to EdgeDB a new built-in admin UI, range types, an official Rust client library, and lots more. You can read more about these changes in the EdgeDB blog, or watch the video below. Fun fact: the team has affectionately named version 2.0, Sagittarius. It must have something to do with it being released during the Sagittarius lunar cycle.
Pronounced “vit”, like “veet”, Vite is the next generation in frontend tooling, providing lots of features, optimised builds, and universal plugins,. From the French word meaning “quick”, Vite is designed to be lighting fast — hence the lighting bolt in their logo — and features instant server start. The latest update includes updates to the Vite CLI, support for Node 14.18 and higher, faster reload times, and some experimental features. Read the hundreds of changes to Vite in the release notes.
⚡️ Vite 3 is out!
The Vite Team, working closely with maintainers of the ecosystem, is happy to announce the next @vite_js major! Thanks to everyone involved in making this release possible 🙌https://t.co/QTcqbXn6bv— Vite ⚡ (@vite_js) July 13, 2022
Are you trying to test complex applications, configurations, or just playing around with different web services? Then LocalStack might be something to think about. It’s a fully functional cloud service emulator that runs on your local machine, or in a single container. This means you can test, learn, or experiment with an environment that’s safe. You’ll also save money on cloud bills, meaning you can spend that money on the cloud when you really need it. Congratulations to LocalStack for your first version release 🥳.
Well, that’s all for this month’s top release picks. Congratulations to everyone who shipped a new release, whether it was version 1.0 or version 9.0. Continue the awesome coding work! If you missed our last Release Radar, read up on the amazing community projects from June.
We love featuring projects submitted by the community. If you are working on an open source project and shipping a major version soon, we’d love to hear from you. Check out our new Release Radar repository, and submit your project to be featured in the GitHub Release Radar.
