Bunburry #8

Sheep Secrets

Rate this book
Miss Marple meets Oscar Wilde in this new series of cosy mysteries set in the picturesque Cotswolds village of Bunburry.

In "Sheep Secrets", the picturesque village of Bunburry is basking in midsummer sunshine when a shepherd finds a body in a nearby quarry. The deceased was taking part in an outdoor survival training course run by Neil Walker, friend of Constable Emma Hollis. The death seems a tragic accident, but Emma insists on amateur sleuth Alfie McAlister joining the course to save Neil's good name. But are the other participants as innocent as they seem? Add an undercover reporter and a mysterious druid to the mix, and Alfie's investigation becomes more complex than he imagined...

Not one of my favourites in the series as very little happened.
I will certainly continue through them though.

Despite the name, the eighth entry in this whimsical series has barely any sheep and not that many secrets, but it does have plenty of charm and an intriguing mystery. A member of an outdoor survival class tumbles to death at an abandoned quarry, and the Bunburry Triangle — retired multimillionaire Alfie McAllister and his two septuagenarian friends — suspect that there the death was no accident. Bunburry mysteries can be uneven, but this was a gem.

Was mir gefallen hat?

Really good afternoon’s reading

I just love these little novellas. Light, funny, great characters. I must say, I’m so glad Betty is gone. I can’t stand her. Emma is much more interesting. Oscar is delightful, as always. And Alfie is just really good at being Alfie. You can read this if you haven’t read the others, but it’s really best to go back to the beginning to get the whole back story. Spending more time in Bunburry is a good thing.

Relaxing Read

Once again a pleasure to visit the village of Banbury. Love the tea time get together with Emma, Madge and Liz though my personal would be cheese over fudge.
Not keen on Oscars involvement with the Banbury triangle, it feels like moving away from the freshness of rural England to the grime of London

Who's secreats?

secrets? On earth would Alfie agree to go camping. He had never thought of himself as an outdoors sort. When there is a murder two very persuasive ladies deside he is going.
Lots of fun again in the Bunburry series. Love to watch poor Alfie cope. He gets roped into some crazy situations!

This is why I don’t participate in outdoor survival training: a dead body always turns up in the quarry. Note to Bunburry: stay in the village, have a pint at the Drunken Horse, eat some famous Bunburry fudge, ramble around a bit. No need to go overboard. I do love sheep. They are very sweet creatures.

Lovely cosy novella perfect for a dreary afternoon. Such fun with the characters and droll humor in a pretty good mystery. Only the sheep know what happened to the man who was at the bottom of the cliff, but the three good friends/amateur sleuths aim to find out!
Nathaniel Parker’s narration makes the story and the humor even better.

Cute story

Ms. Marchmont writes an entertaining story for all readers. Her characters are well written with witty dialogue and the storyline keeps your interest. This time around, Archie has to solve the death of a man on a survival course, and horrors of all horrors Archie must brave the elements to do it. Very enjoyable book.

Lukijana Nathaniel Parker.

Move Alfie along

I really do enjoy these indulgent mysteries, but please lets move Alfie along. And Emma, the tension has been going on for a while now. Still, lighthearted and enjoyable.

What a disappointment! The story was flowing along nicely, although no interesting tidbits about Alfie's genealogy were provided, when the solution to the mystery abruptly appeared. It's sad when the author has to use a recap to explain the solution.

These books are little gems. I normally don't like novellas but these are structured beautifully. You get a full mystery with a resolution and character development. The solving of the mystery is not drawn out, instead it is concise.

One of the Bunbury locals has a new outdoor adventure camp that ends in disaster. One of the participants falls into the quarry and dies. Of course, that means Alfie must go undercover to find the murderer.

My least favorite novella in the series to-date. At least that annoying Betty wasn't in it. (I hope we have heard the last of her, but I doubt it.)

I am addicted to Bunburry! I've been listening to the entire series and the combination of Helena Marchmont's writing and Nathaniel Parker's narration is divine. Better than a chocolate Advent calendar, Bunburry episode everything is a total treat. Highly recommended.

Alfie gets talked into going on an outward bound type of trip after a man dies by falling into a quarry. It is discovered he had eaten magic mushrooms. Alfie's also got a private investigator looking for his father.
