Ship to shore Something's amiss Yeah this is more Than a slight list And your band can play on While she sinks But we all end up In the drink Down we start to slide Deckchairs over the side Not what I meant by over ice Lights flicker and props wind down As we sink into the sound Let's have a drink and a laugh as we slowly spiral down It moves slow like a hearse Imperceptible at first And in denial I am well-versed It's been achin' like a tooth Think I'm mournin' the loss of my youth And getting old is such a drag Yeah, ain't it the truth And is there anything that's sadder than Some dude singin' 'bout way back when am I right Well that's the house where I reside And I'll try not to laugh when you arrive And I don't wanna fight Just wanna bask in the dying of the light And oh my friends yeah didn't we have fun Chin up as we walk into the setting sun

I am every boy off the lake Dying of thirst and wide awake And I got something you can take I'll wait for you Adolescent dreams and fears And when I need her close she appears And she shines just like a jewel As she climbs out of the pool When she slowly turns and smiles I rewind She's so fine She's all mine And it's one, two, three She's hear with me Talking in stereo And love's scary I won't let it get me But I don't wanna be alone And I'm falling hard I'm falling And she shines just like a jewel As she climbs out of the pool When she slowly turns and smiles I could die She's so fine She's all mine

Lying around in bed Something tiptoes inside my head It's the state I'm in Saturday, 10:27am And I might be A little off-key But all I need is you and a melody When I open up my eyes There's nothing better that I know Than nothin' to do And nowhere to go There's nothin' better in the world Than wakin' up singin' September Gurls Don't wanna see The world bleed All I need is you and a melody When I open up my eyes And I'm suddenly So totally Overjoyed to take my liberty This time time is on our side And you know Monday's waiting To get it's claws in you Just sing a tune and seize the day 'Cause it's waiting And I'm waiting For you Don't wanna see The world bleed All I need is you and a melody When I open up my eyes And I'm suddenly So totally Overjoyed to take my liberty This time time is on our side And I wanna be Completely Here with you and melody Shut the world outside And I might be A little off-key But all I need is you and a melody When I open up my eyes

I watch the sun set I know I'll see it rise I got a smile on my face So no one sees me cry But you have messed me up Yeah you And there's never gonna be another like you They broke the mold my friend No we're never gonna see the likes of you again I can see you on 17th Street Just like time stands still If you can haunt me to the day I die I hope you will I hope you will High-fivin' on the high seas Middle finger for a prow But these days fate's firing A lot of shots across our bow I just don't see don't understand how you could just be gone I never knew I never thought I'd sing this for you Yeah you have taken the wind from my sails And no one's gonna forget the love you gave Yeah don't you worry about that And now there's two huge shoes to fill Underneath the Giant's hat And you know it's overwhelming I feel you all over this place I don't care if you look right through me I just wanna see your face Your face And there's never gonna be another like you They broke the mold my friend No we're never gonna see the likes of you again I can see you on 17th Street Just like time stands still If you can haunt me to the day I die I hope you will I hope you will

So still Smoke on the hill Days gettin' shorter seasons turn As a thousand eyes watch a creeping burn Out in Ohio they're startin' to freeze We got smoke and flames in a dead dry heat The sky is turnin' orange feel the air change It's hard to see things clearly in this light so strange And it's into the embers again The hillside's on fire As the year comes to an end It's raining ash in Altadena Happy Halloween yeah It's into the embers again That house you built out of made up truths well Something hot just landed on the roof You can smell the smoke but it don't make a sound Better put it out before it burns you down And put a lookout on the mountain To watch the ground 'Cause we're into the embers again When you put out this fire The next one will begin Just gotta maintain And pray for rain 'Cause we're into the embers again Last night I had a dream of spring Green grass and clear blue skies Days stretching into summertime And cool nights Once I thought I could escape these things Maneuver around with you But now I know the only way out for us Is through Through And it's into the embers again The hillside's on fire As the year comes to an end It's raining ash in Altadena Happy Halloween yeah It's into the embers again And we're into the embers again If I can make it to Thanksgiving I can make it to the end It always feels so weird This time of year Yeah we're into the embers again

about

God Tamers, the Altadena, California-based band led by ex-Actionslacks singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Tim Scanlin, released their debut self-titled 6-song EP on May 16th, 2025 via their own Astonishing Lawns imprint.

Taking their name from “Silver” by Echo & the Bunnymen, God Tamers toil in the time-honored tradition of melodic alt-rock, while incorporating influences (80s new wave, 60s folk rock, orchestral pop) from well outside the genre.

After over a decade away from music, Scanlin started writing again in 2017, and spent much of the pandemic assembling a stockpile of songs, six of which appear on this EP. Entirely written, recorded and mixed by Scanlin at his own Sapphire Studio at the base of the San Gabriel mountains, these songs are the product of hundreds of hours of trial, error, and eventual progress.

This debut EP is predominantly a rumination on aging and mortality, inspired in part by the sudden death of Scanlin’s friend and legendary San Francisco scene photographer Peter Ellenby in 2022. A rave-up based on a repeating 6-note melody and culminating in huge guitar arpeggios and strings, lead track “Like Gravity Cares (About Deckchairs)” is a musical statement of purpose that uses a Titanic-like calamity at sea as a metaphor for the slide into oblivion. At turns wry (“not what I meant by over ice”) and morose (“it moves slow like a hearse”) the song is above all self-aware, with Scanlin asking, “Is there anything that’s sadder than some dude singin’ ‘bout way back when?”

“Ghost of Honor” is Scanlin’s tribute to the incomparable Ellenby, a lamentation of losing both a brother and their salad days in 90s SF (“High-fivin’ on the high seas / middle finger for a prow”). Instrumental closer “Deckchair Sinking” brings us full circle, reprising the melodic figure from “Gravity” and pairing it with a hypnotic bassline to create a meditative and feedback-laden journey to the depths.

Elsewhere, the EP explores the challenges of the living. Partly inspired by his teenage sons, and with a titular reference to Rush’s “Subdivisions”, the synth-infused “A Charm To Soothe” is Scanlin’s homage to the new wave classics and teensploitation movies of his 80s youth, with lyrical references to Risky Business and Valley Girl, and a not-so-subtle nod to a (the?) era-defining scene in the GOAT, Fast Times At Ridgemont High. “You & A Melody,” a crunchy nod to 20-something emancipation, finds our protagonist a decade later, waking up singing Big Star’s “September Gurls” on Saturday at 10:27am (the exact best time of the week, according to Scanlin).

But on this highly personal album, it’s the acoustic-based “Into The Embers” that’s achieved a heartbreaking and tragic broader relevance. On January 7th, 2025 an unprecedented firestorm powered by 90mph winds ripped through the community of Altadena, killing 17 residents and destroying thousands of homes (Scanlin’s barely survived; the fire came within 15 feet). Written in 2022, the song’s lyrics are now eerily prescient. “That house you built out of made up truths / well something hot just landed on the roof,” sings Scanlin, presaging the exact mode of destruction that took his friends’ and neighbors’ homes. Elsewhere the chorus declares “It’s raining ash in Altadena / it’s into the embers again.” Scanlin says, “When I wrote ‘Embers’, I wanted to use life in the southern California fire zone as a metaphor for the never-ending challenges of being an adult. I never thought I was describing an impending real life catastrophe. It’s a weird and tragic coincidence.”

While this debut is essentially Scanlin singing about his lived experience as a middle-aged dad, husband, human, and reinvigorated artist living in the suburbs of NE Los Angeles, the themes of these songs – loss, nostalgia, getting older, hard-won wisdom – are universal.

And the future? Scanlin’s currently at work on the next EP, ensuring that despite its years-long gestation, God Tamers marks a beginning, not an end.

NOTE: I finished writing and recording "Into The Embers" - which mentions my hometown of Altadena, California by name - two years before the Eaton fire devastated the town in January, 2025, making the song eerily and tragically prescient. I considered not including it on this EP out of concern that it might be perceived as exploitative (despite being an Eaton fire evacuee myself). But it’s “of a piece” with the rest of these songs, and belongs with them, so I’ve chosen to include it. ~ Tim
