Girl's Journey in an Art Quilt
Do you remember that little girl? Is she inside of you? This work is an invitation to enter the memory, the dream and the story. “Look through to the Memory” is a large art quilt combining surface design with acrylics paints on sheer and muslin fabric, with photo transfer onto muslin and drawing with pen. I have worked to create a rich landscape that draws the viewer into the window and beyond, providing imagery and narrative that provides something new to see with each new look.

Storytelling in Art Quilts
I love creating art quilts with a story – but there’s always room for the viewer to wonder, and to insert personal memories and thoughts into what the work means. Details add to the storytelling process. Here, an empty chair is in an overgrown garden. Who sat there? Where are they now? What kind of garden is this? The rich texture and colors and textures of art quilts help to tell stories.

Memories and Story fill this Wall Art
“Listening to Water Over Rocks.” Inspiration came from a time of listening. I was next to a river in South Carolina. The photo of water in the quilt was transferred to fabric from a photo I took of that river. The rest of the quilt – symbols of memory – rich textures and colors – (All original fabric printing with acrylics) give voice to that experience. Our memories can be the beginning of artwork.

Art quilt telling a story of memory
Storytelling with Textiles. Inspired by a poem depicting memory and loss, I have created the art quilt “Memory of the Burned House.”I create narrative works that evoke memories and dreams of home. Using originally printed fabrics (monotype-printed, stenciled, relief and resist print) combined with photos transferred to muslin, I explore narrative through texture and color.

Storytelling in my art quilts
This art quilt features a vast, complex sea of blue and a painted yellow sky. The simple rendering of the girl in the rowboat as a line drawing created just the effect I wanted. The story is unfinished. I use acrylic paints (monotype, relief, stencil, resist and painted) and various drawing utensils for image creation on fabric as I create my art quilts.

Storytelling with Textile Art
Memory Shadows. Sometimes it’s images of actual events we remember that’s interesting. Sometimes it’s capturing the feeling of a memory that’s more interesting. I try to capture the feelings of memories in my storytelling artwork. I use layers of fabric and paint to tell stories creating textile collage / art quilts. Here’s one in progress.

Stitching a Story Quilt of a Strong Woman
Strong women have the gift of being there for each other. Inspired by that, I have created “Writing the Next Word.” This will quilt has been accepted to SAQA’s traveling global exhibit, “Haven.” I created it to show that a safe harbor is not always a place, it can be a person. I began by drawing a figure based on a member of my weekly writing group: a strong, confident older woman. I build layers with acrylic paints on fabrics. See it in progress here, on my blog.

A Storytelling Art Quilt - The Magic Socks
This storytelling art quilt is filled with imagination, rich colors and texture. In their boring little town, two girls dream of flying away, but don’t know how. Then they find the Magic Socks. I created this scene with hand printed fabrics using monotype, stencils, resist, relief printing and direct painting with acrylics. Machine stitching.

The story in an art quilt
What stories does this abandoned door hold? My inspiration for creating textile collaged artwork can come from many places. For a recent series of art quilts, I have been inspired by the many meanings of windows. They allow us through. They prevent viewing. They reflect. Using transfers of original photos onto muslin, I am capturing these ideas in painted, collaged fabric..

Art quilt inspired by a dream
This art quilt tells an imaginative story of little girls dreaming of flying away. It’s all about contrast. Their town is created in patterns of brown and black. The sky is filled with collr and dreams: sky blue with lime green. The power, they believe, is from their feet: The Magic Socks. I create stories in quilts with rich patterns and colors, hand printed fabric collaged and stitched. One of a kind original artwork to add warmth to your home décor.

Memories of home tell a story
A storytelling art quilt can add warmth and meaning to your home. I use textile collage and hand-printed fabric created with acrylics to dig into memories and dreams. Inspiration comes from my interest in the journey of girls and women. It is an honor when my work finds a home! Take a look at storytelling artwork on my website.

Art quilt on exhibit evokes memory
Happy to be exhibiting in the Fine Arts exhibit of Decatur Arts Alliance. Dalton Gallery, Agnes Scott College, Jue 2021. This is a detail of “Look Through the Memories.” Art quilt. Acrylics on fabric. Inspired by a beautiful close-up of sun on a tree. I loved the details, the colors and the intertwining vines. I imagined it as a metaphor for looking through memories to one’s home.
This art quilt was inspired by the photos of the windows, cast aside in the corner of a garden. I transferred the photos to fabric, then built the art quilt. There is a storytelling component. Why is the little girl alone in the garden? Hand printed fabric and patterns enhance the story and add depth of color and texture. One of a kind original artwork for your home décor. Story Unfolds in Color and Pattern
A large wall quilt can transform a room’s decor. My original, one-of-a-kind artworks are filled with color and warmth. This is “Stepping on the Cracks.” Its large size creates a strong focal point for a room. The journey of a young girl is depicted as she runs through an environment of deep reds and other strong colors and patterns.

Textile portrait of a young girl
Storytelling artwork forms my primary body of work. I am interested, especially, in the journeys of girls and young women. In this quilt I was capturing the feeling of being in-between, staying or going. Which? For the portrait I layered sheer fabric with some watercolor washes, monotype print on the fabric and drawing with oil pastels. This was just selected for exhibit in the SAQA virtual gallery called "Waiting, " available on saqa.com
