Well, this one was a surprise... one of the most famous Muppets songs wasn’t actually written for the Muppets.

Its first appearance on screen couldn’t really have been more different. Composer Piero Umiliani wrote the nonsense-lyrics song for a 1968 Italian ‘mondo’ film - a pseudo-documentary that relied on the shock factor - about Scandinavian sexuality. (Thankfully, there are no puppets.)

The song then became a minor radio hit in the US, which is where Sesame Street producer Joan Ganz Cooney heard it and thought it could be great for her new hire, Jim Henson.
