For the Principles of Design I did balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, and rhythm. The hardest I thought was rhythm because you had to combine movement and pattern together.

Emphasis is shown here by centering the focus of the piece. It also makes the umbrella pop by using bright colors compared to the others shown. This is also the only umbrella where the viewer can see part of the persons face.

10. This work of art displays emphasis in three different ways. First, the single flower is made red, which draws the attention immediately. Second, all of the surrounding flowers are a whiter color and are blurred, leaving the single red flower to be the only thing in focus. Third, the red flower is smaller than all of the surrounding flowers, drawing attention to it as well.

I found this lesson on princetonol.com and my students ran with it. It is a project submitted by Amy Shapley. I leave my lessons open ended and this allows for more creativity than I could ever dream up. I have done this project twice with middle school students. This is a simple example of emphasis. The bright red color of the single circle among the valley of white ones makes it stand out. The texture is simple circles yet the viewer can see a few more shapes than just the circles.
