Pristine beaches that segue into majestic mountains, postcard-worthy towns encircled by well-preserved nature, colourful cuisine and a thousand years of history: Croatia, the jewel of the Adriatic, offers all of this and much more!
When you think of Croatia, it’s most probably the coastline that comes to mind. Not surprising, given that this Balkan nation boasts a fraction over 1,100 miles of coast and a thousand islands and islets! From Dubrovnik, the pearl of the Adriatic famed for its city walls and white stone buildings, to Rovinj, the port of Istria with obvious Italian influences, the coastal towns are awash with architectural treasures, archaeological sites and pretty squares that invite you to stop and soak up the sun. In Split, make time in your day to visit Diocletian’s Palace, an incredibly well-preserved example of Roman construction. While the main attraction of Pula is the amphitheatre that echoes with the sounds of the spectacles of antiquity. After the city, a trip out to the myriad Croatian islands offers a taste of paradise on Earth. Brac and Hvar are immensely popular for their stylish surroundings and festive vibes. Not to mention Mljet, the pretty leafy island off the Dalmatian coast, an ideal destination for a day trip from Dubrovnik. For something a touch more sedate, head for Vis, a much more secluded island, its secret coves breathtakingly magical.
Away from the towns and villages, visitors to Croatia seeking fresh air and nature are well catered for. Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site listed for its chain of crystal clear lakes connected by spectacular waterfalls, is absolutely breathtaking. In the Dinaric Alps, Paklenica National Park offers a network of trails and sheer cliffs to push the most seasoned hikers and climbers to their limits. Before leaving Croatia, be sure to swing by Zagreb, the country’s capital, an appealing blend of historic charm and modern living. Lose yourself in its old town and, in the vicinity of the 13th-century Church of St. Mark, marvel at the eclectic mix of colourfully painted houses, art nouveau monuments and medieval towers.
