Denmark is brimming with fantastic places to visit. From cosmopolitan Copenhagen to idyllic Aarhus by way of the country’s natural marvels, Møns Klint and the forest of Dyrehaven to name but two, this Scandinavian gem is enchanting in so many ways.
Denmark’s capital Copenhagen is a veritable ode to hygge, the feeling of cosy contentment you get from the little things in life. Hop on a bicycle and pedal over to Nyhavn, a waterfront district in the city, famed for its charming colourful buildings and bustling coffee shops, its new developments beacons for sustainable architecture. Soak up some local culture in museums with an international reputation – the National Museum of Denmark for Danish history or the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek for art. Are you a design devotee? Then you’ll absolutely love the minimalist and functional beauty of Danish furniture, on display in shops and exhibitions all over Copenhagen. Or does food float your boat? Rest assured, you’re in good hands in Copenhagen which is a gourmet paradise replete with multiple starry restaurants and food markets such as Torvehallerne.
Outside its capital, Denmark boasts an array of historical sites and beauty spots. Admire sweeping views of the Baltic Sea from the limestone and chalk cliffs of Møns Klint. Meander through the pretty streets of Aarhus’s old town, on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula, and visit Frederiksborg Castle, the biggest palace in the whole of Scandinavia, and its impressive French formal gardens planted on three islets dotting the lake. Other unmissable destinations include Dyrehaven, literally “deer park”, the old hunting ground of Denmark’s kings; Råbjerg Mile, the tallest migrating dune in Europe; and the amazing beaches on the Danish west coast, looking out to the North Sea. Last but not least, don’t forget to check out one of Europe’s best preserved water castles, Egeskov at Odense, or head off on a road trip around the country – by car, by campervan or, for the more intrepid, by bike, making the most of Denmark’s excellent network of bicycle paths.
