From Carthage to Kairouan, a rich cultural and historic heritage

Ancient ruins, troglodyte dwellings, medinas and mosques… Tunisia’s architectural heritage is incredibly diverse to say the least! The archaeological site of Carthage, a vast swathe of ancient ruins, is an evocative reminder of the Punic city’s tumultuous past. The Bardo Museum in Tunis on the other hand houses a superb collection of mosaics and Roman artefacts. The Medina of Tunis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a tangle of streets and alleyways always bustling with life, where souks overflow with handcrafted products, spices and colourful fabrics. Other destinations include Sidi Bou Said, a city of brilliant-white houses with blue doors proudly facing out to sea on a rocky promontory in the Gulf of Tunis.
Another noteworthy site is the small Berber village of Matmata in the south of Tunisia, known for its troglodyte structures shot to stratospheric fame by the Star Wars film trilogy. You mustn’t miss Kairouan either, the fourth holiest city in Islam, with its majestic colossal mosque and historic monuments. At El Jem, the Roman amphitheatre, one of the best preserved in the world, will transport you to a time of gladiators and epic spectacles.

Jaw-dropping landscapes from Mediterranean beaches to the Atlas Mountains

Equally impressive is Tunisia’s natural heritage. On the coast, Hammamet, Sousse and Djerba offer stretches of white sand where sun-worshipping and water sports are the order of the day. Going inland, a hike in the Atlas Mountains will show another side of Tunisia, one of rugged landscapes and pretty villages clinging to the rock face. The Sahara Desert will transport you to a universe of golden dunes and oases. Spend a starlit night in a traditional Berber camp and, in the region of Tozeur, soak in the warm waters of the natural springs amidst the world’s largest palm grove. Magical!
