about

Harlan Records #34 (FCH034)-- Divorce Chord was Mike Lierly's and my project in between Soophie Nun Squad and Universe, and though the songs, style, and content may reflect that, they were just as defined by the very limitations of this band: EVERY Divorce Chord song was recorded as individual, isolated tracks through an analog tube pre-amp into a Loop Station, then occasionally bounced back and forth to a digital 4-track.

Once each track was finalized, the entire song up to that point was saved, unmixable, immutable. Also, ANYONE could contribute to Divorce Chord, as long as they used the Loop Station and followed our self-imposed rules-- this often reared its head through the "True Stories" series throughout both records.

The process of recording these songs required a lot of live-mixing, gaining an understanding of the room sound and Loop Station/pre-amp manipulation, and resulted in our learning a whole lot about the physicality of recording. Every single session, every song, was a different challenge, and ABSOLUTELY the most fun I've ever had making music. I'd do it again in an instant.
