Gibson carried the ball 12 times for 41 yards and caught four of six targets for 20 yards in Sunday's 23-16 win over the Bills. With Rhamondre Stevenson getting the day off in a meaningless game for both sides, Gibson led the Patriots' backfield and topped 60 scrimmage yards for the second straight week. The former Washington RB capably filled a backup role for New England in 2024, finishing the season with 744 combined yards over 17 appearances. Stevenson is under contract through 2028 while Gibson has two more years left on his deal, but a new coaching staff might have different ideas about the workload split between them next season after head coach Jerod Mayo and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt were let go immediately after Sunday's contest.
Gibson ran for 63 yards on 12 carries against the Chargers on Saturday. The Patriots previously indicated that Gibson would start over Rhamondre Stevenson in this game, but evidently the Patriots meant that Gibson would merely get the most usage of the two, as Stevenson was for some reason still the ceremonial starter Saturday. It's not clear what New England meant to convey with that, but Stevenson finished with only two carries for one yard while Gibson otherwise took over the backfield. Stevenson was previously reported as benched due to his prolific fumbling, and it remains to be seen if the Patriots mean to continue making a point on that front. Neither Patriots running back is likely set up all that great against the Bills in Week 18, but it seems like Gibson has the recent momentum, mixed signals from the Patriots coaches aside.
Gibson will start at running back over Rhamondre Stevenson in Saturday's game against the Chargers, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports. On the heels of his recent fumbling issues, Stevenson is slated to give way to Gibson on Saturday, at least in terms of the starting assignment. That said, we'd still expect Stevenson to see his share of work versus the Chargers, but his ball security issues of late should lead to Gibson seeing a higher percentage of New England's backfield snaps than usual in Week 17.

As Saturday's game against the Chargers approaches, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald relays that head coach Jerod Mayo indicated that it's a possibility that the team could start Gibson over Stevenson in Week 17. The last time that happened (stemming from Stevenson's ball-security issues early on this season), the two backs each logged 28 snaps in the Patriots' Week 5 loss to the Dolphins, with Stevenson carrying 12 times for 89 yards and a TD and catching four passes for three yards, while Gibson rushed six times for 52 yards, adding one catch for four yards. With that in mind, it's plausible that Gibson could handle enough touches versus Los Angeles to merit deep-league lineup consideration, but Stevenson figures to remain part of the game plan, even if he doesn't take the first snap out of the team's backfield.
Gibson had seven carries for 33 yards and two receptions (on as many targets) for 31 yards in Sunday's 30-17 loss to the Cardinals. Gibson followed up his first touchdown of the season with a well-rounded effort behind starter Rhamondre Stevenson (13-69-0). The 26-year-old Gibson is averaging 4.7 yards with the Patriots this season, a mark he hadn't sniffed since his impressive rookie campaign with Washington in 2020. Gibson can provide niche value for those in deep PPR formats for Week 16 against Buffalo.

While we don't expect Gibson to overtake Stevenson in the Patriots' backfield pecking order any time soon, Gibson's workload this coming weekend against the Colts will be worth monitoring to see if the uptick in his RB snap share extends beyond Week 12, when Stevenson struggled to get going in a game in which Miami led by a 31-0 score by the end of the third quarter.
