Collage artist and designer Rex Ray dies
Artist Rex Ray, a versatile graphic designer who created book covers, tour posters and album art in San Francisco for 35 years, died Monday at UCSF Medical Center. Mr. Ray, whose real name was Michael Patterson, built his reputation designing club flyers for live music shows and the T-shirts worn by the AIDS activist organization ACT UP. Mr. Ray’s personal art, a self-invented hybrid of painting and collage, is in the collections of the San Jose Museum of Art, the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art owns 41 of his works and included his art in the group shows “Belles Letters” in 2005 and “Pop Noise” in 2007. Several of his canvases are in a traveling exhibition called “Beauty Reigns,” organized by McNay Art Museum in San Antonio. San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival and Visual Aid.
