Erik Salazar Vicious. That’s what came to mind my first go around with this release. Sure, it’s heavy like all hardcore is, but the technical chops showcased here & sprinkled throughout has given this album some serious bite not found on other HC releases I’ve heard recently. It’s like taking a skateboard, grinding on everything you see & smashing everything up. It’s street. It’s mean. It’s hardcore from the East Side of town. Can’t wait to see what Cold Vein does next! Favorite track: Super Cell.

COLD VEIN "Break Away" [IBR-004]

Icebreaker Records isn’t just about repressing NY/LIHC classics — the other half of the mission is to showcase hardcore bands from around the globe, with a focus on the East Coast. Up next we have the new Philly / NYC hybrid Cold Vein. For a young band that started in early 2024, they have already secured a New Hardcore Band Spotlight on NoEcho & have been playing shows non-stop all over the Northeast.

“Break Away” is a collection of tracks off their debut album “Formation” (self-released last summer), plus 2 new tracks recorded exclusively for this release. A tug of war between the straightforward riffing of NYHC & the technicality found in Philadelphia hardcore, with a goal to motivate listeners to find stable ground in these uncertain times. Cold Vein’s aim is to keep building bridges between the many worlds of hardcore & underground subcultures. Personally I think this band has something cool going on, so I’m excited to see where they take it.
