Ian Vargo is set to release his new single, Light Up The Room, on October 4th, 2024. Vargo, a producer and multi-instrumentalist who has worked with labels such as EMI, Capitol, and Fueled By Ramen, was inspired to write the song in response to one of the many mass shootings that have tragically become commonplace in the United States.

At first, the melodic, piano-driven single may sound like a cheerful pop tune, but a closer listen reveals a much darker message behind the lyrics. Vargo explains, “Light Up The Room is a double entendre of sorts. Musically, it feels uplifting and inspirational, but it’s not about someone lighting up a room with their smile and presence. It’s about someone entering a public space and killing a bunch of innocent people with a gun. My hope was to draw contrast between the music and meaning.”

The soft rock-inspired track, entirely produced by Vargo, is propelled by buoyant piano, groovy drums and bass, and a strained, vulnerable vocal performance. The lyrics read like the manifesto of a killer, adding to the song's haunting impact.

“This song shouldn’t exist," Vargo continues. "Children go through active shooter drills in elementary school. Firearms are the leading cause of death among children in the United States. That is disgusting. If you live in the US, make sure you’re registered to vote, and vote for candidates who support reasonable firearms legislation.”

Light Up The Room will be available on all major streaming platforms starting October 4th, 2024.
