Centered on Power’s 21-minute radically notated string quartet Brace Each Other Dive, Brace is strange, exhilarating chamber music produced by the heightened states of focus required in Power’s groundbreaking text scores, which the quartet interpreted and condensed into graphic scores they made themselves. They lunge into open-string chords, halting glissandi, and vibrato that stretches the limits of taste, performed via a rapid coordination of cueing, pacing, and even indications on when to open and close their eyes. Violinist Ledah Finck writes in the liner notes that the piece “brought Bergamot closer together (with) a blinding patience, which eventually releases the listener, blinking and vulnerable, having been held for a while by something strange and vast.”
Bookending the quartet are reveni ad me, a starkly harmonic droning piece for solo electric organ; and untitled, a viola-cello lockstep duo that is a distant ancestor to the quartet. The album comes with a 13-page booklet designed by Jacob DeGeal that features liner notes by Ledah Finck and Ian Power, score excerpts, and reproductions of the beautiful hand-drawn shorthand scores made by Bergamot Quartet.

After having to endure a full day at work with someone else's 1980s "Punk" music on all day, listening to this album is what makes me feel normal again. Highly recommended to realign your whatevers. jwilliamkay
Violinist & composer Christopher Otto turns in a sprawling work that emphasizes the hypnotic effect of drone in its slowly expanding tones. Bandcamp New & Notable Nov 20, 2021
Inspired by Steve Reich and Terry Riley, this contemporary composer and violinist creates pensive, minimal-but-emotional work. Bandcamp New & Notable May 25, 2016
My favorite from Catherine Lamb. The fresh sounds from unusual instruments are coupled with Lamb's characteristic microtonal alterations and ancient music inspirations. The result is a very expressive and moving work, the kind you want to listen again and again so you don't loose that melancholic state it brings you to. doedelzak
