Spelling & Word Study (Literacy)

Being able to write effectively and communicate thoughts/information requires students to have knowledge of words along with correct spelling. BLD (2018) states that it is best for students to learn the spelling of the word rather than just memorizing how it looks. With the background knowledge and understanding of the spelling, students can use the information to build new words as well. Teachers should spelling of words throughout their lessons and in their classroom environment.

This is an activity that students participate in throughout the year. In the beginning of the year, the teacher provides students with their own personal wordbook. The students are then required to continuously add words in their book to assist them with learning word spelling patterns and vocabulary growth. This is an effective & useful activity because it promotes students to become independent spellers. Additionally, it is good practice to continue adding words in their personal books.
This activity is very creative. It involves students to build poems (both rhyming and non-rhyming). The teacher either uses 3-4 different words as choices to fill in the blanks for the poem or uses students’ names as options. Giving choice to students is a great way to promote engagement and inclusion. This is a useful activity because students are exposed to many different words and get to build their vocabulary as well.
This is an awesome activity for late primary/early junior level students. The teacher gives the students a certain amount of individual letters. The students are then required to blend the letters to make 3, 4, or 4+ letter words. This is an effective & useful activity because it provides students with a chance to make real words by blending sounds & letters. Students need to also use their background knowledge of spelling patterns and word families to successfully participate in this activity.

In Chapter 5 of this resource, spelling patterns are explained in relation to phonics. This chapter explains how spelling and word recognition is useful while students are reading and/or writing. The importance of being able to construct meaning along with identifying & spelling words is thoroughly explained with examples. I would recommend this resource because it examples of activities and teaching strategies.

The importance of using Word Study is connected with students’ learning of word patterns rather than word memorizations. This resource also includes an article that describes the best word study approaches for the classroom. I would recommend this resource because it is detailed and thorough. Additionally, it includes various teaching strategies that could be very useful in any classroom.

This is an engaging activity for the whole class. This activity can be used as assessment in various ways. First the teacher could keep a mental list of which students were able to consistently participate in the game & which students didn’t give any answers. Additionally, the teacher could extend this activity to further assess the students’ knowledge of spelling & word study. By asking students to write a sentence for the “found” word, he could keep track of their spelling for other words too.
This activity can be great for assessment because it can be used for assessing the students’ ability to spell words & make the words past tense (e.g., shop -> shopped). Teachers could assess this skill by collecting students’ work & evaluating if individual students were able to spell the words & turn them into past tense by using an –ed ending. This is an effective & useful assessment tool because it can allow teachers to determine which students understand spelling concepts & which do not.
