The new kitchen in this beachside cottage has a peninsula with a cooktop and space to sit, as well as marble countertops that Lisa Marie Brooks, homeowner and real estate agent, bought for a discount from a stone remnants distributor. The cabinets are made with affordable maple. "If you're using wood like this, mix in a few glass-front doors so your cabinets don't look too heavy," says Lisa Marie.

Homeowners Catherine and Nick Balding run a remodeling company, Balding Brothers, so they were well-equipped to take on the job of renovating their Wilmington, North Carolina, kitchen. The gourmet space now has stainless steel appliances, an industrial-style range hood and a 7-foot-long, concrete-topped island. The original cabinets got a facelift with paint and glass-front doors. The couple also added Pottery Barn seagrass stools, a subway tile backsplash and a butcher-block counter around the perimeter.

Designer Sarah Richardson went with rustic reclaimed barn board on the island, plus black hardware and an oak floor. One of her tips for a great cookspace: Spread out the functions in a kitchen so as many people as possible can work at once. Richardson likes to put a sink in the island so it’s separate from the cooking and prep spaces.

Brooklyn homeowners Angela and Joe Austin worked with designer Danielle Fennoy to create a soothing setting for making meals with their family. An absence of hardware modernizes Shaker-style cabinets, and the herringbone backsplash and quartz countertop add informal beauty. While the room has calming vibes, there’s usually plenty of action here. “The kids often join in to make arepas with huevos pericos — scrambled eggs with scallions and tomatoes — a classic Colombian breakfast,” says Angela.

Fariha Nasir and Hassaan Anis didn’t get to choose any of the finishes in the kitchen of their newly built home — the builder did. They lucked out with gray cabinets and a marble subway tile backsplash, but the space lacked some of the cozy elements they craved. To make this room more homey, Fariha installed brass cabinet hardware from Pottery Barn, a brass and black pendant by Rejuvenation and a vintage-style rug. The piece of art above the cooktop (from Heirloom Print Shop on Etsy) and the one between the windows add charm.

To accompany this dramatic centerpiece, Jewel re-covered thrifted acrylic barstools in striped Milton & King fabric. The brass and glass pendants above are by Corbett.

Ditching the dining area in favor of a 9-foot island gave homeowner Pamela Gibbs plenty of room to prep, eat and entertain in her formerly cramped kitchen. Plus, floor-to-ceiling cabinets provide tons of storage. “There are places to stash everything so that if last-minute company pops over, I can tuck away my clutter,” she says.

When designer Tyler Karu reimagined this small kitchen for her mom (a recipe developer and food writer), she didn't compromise on form or function. While maximizing the space, she added standout elements like a charming Dutch door and a natural walnut backsplash. “It’s unexpected and makes this utilitarian space feel special,” says Tyler.

“I had come to love color as a result of living in different places and collecting art from all over,” says homeowner Denise Mauro. Guided by designer Victoria Sheffield, Denise and her husband, Rick, decided to combine a daring shade of teal and not-shy, Moroccan-style tiles (from Soho Studio Corp). Rick, a geologist, picked the granite countertop for its prominent swirls. Now, it’s the most spirited spot in the house. “When our family is all together in the kitchen,” says Denise, “those are our loudest and happiest times.”
