Various Ways to make this Shot. Learn how to "Pinch" the cue ball. Shots performed with JFlowers SMO shaft and Legends cue.... | By Big Al's Billiards | Alright guys here's the situation that comes up all the time okay I have one ball here the sixth ball so it's a low ball and then I have the eight ball I need to get down table preferably in this area right here for a next shot okay how do we do that this ball is about two and a/ 2 inches off the rail and it is about 80degree cut 7580 degree cut okay let's look at the importance of trajectory and rub. I know we all like a good rub. I'm not really talking about that kind of rub. Um I'm talking about rubbing the rails. Okay? So let's look at a few different options and ways to get downtable and get out in this kind of situation. If you play backspin on this shot what do you think is going to happen? Do you think you're going to get downtable here. Just backspin. Okay? Cuz a lot of lower intermediate players will just try to play this with backspin. Okay? But let's see what happens. There's a good chance they're going to scratch in one of these side pockets. So why did that happen? Well Uh basically when you are playing backspin backspin's job is to give you a new trajectory coming off of your object ball. But when you're only hitting a sliver of the ball it doesn't really have much energy to create a new trajectory. And when you're very close to the rail like this it doesn't have a lot of space to set a new trajectory either. Okay? So it doesn't make a whole lot of difference in your angle whether you play backspin or centre ball really to be honest. Um so or even top spin. It's still going to kind of remain in this area of the table. Alright? Cuz you're not hitting much of your object pole. So let's look at a couple other options. Okay now a lot of you intermediate players will probably look at that and say I need to play bottom left. Okay? And that can work absolutely. Um however you are going to be flirting with this side pocket right here on that shot. Okay? Cuz the bottom is the the most powerful factor in that. The cue ball being a circle when we're looking at it two dimensionally because we're hitting it two dimensionally more or less. Um you cannot get very much sidespin at the bottom or the top of the cue ball. Okay so you basically are only getting three quarters of a tip down at the bottom of the cue ball of left spin or right spin. Because you're down at near the bottom of the cue ball. So let's look at what bottom left looks like. And we'll see if we can pass the side pocket. But either way we're flir with it. We just missed it. Okay. I stroked it nice. Stroked it good with bottom left. And we were one inch away from losing the game. Okay. As I was saying the cue ball being a sphere. A circle. When we're hitting it when we're facing it and looking at it. Uh we can get much more action hitting half of the weight and using the rub factor. Okay we're going to rub that rail. Um we're not going to worry about the the trajectory change coming off of the object ball. We are going to worry about the rubbing off of the rail. And it's going to bring us into here very easily without any effort. Into this zone here to bring us over here for a nice shot on the eighth. So check it out. One is going to be with front hand English. Meaning I'm going to adjust my front hand to play two to two and a half tips of left centre English. Okay, that last shot, I like to call that pinching the cue ball, okay? Cuz you're basically pinching the side of the cue ball as far on the side as you can and it creates a lot of side action coming off this rail and you don't even have to hit hard and because you're playing outside spin on that at a medium to softer weight. Spin and do a throw becomes a factor and that helps you out on this shot because it makes this pocket so big, okay? It's it throws it towards the pocket. So when I'm playing the left in this situation it's going to throw it to the right. Meaning I can actually hit a little bit more of this object ball and make better contact with this object ball because the throw is going to help throw it right in the pocket. Uh so I can hit a little bit more than if I was playing no spin at all. Okay? So let's look at another solution another option here. Let's look the backhand English solution okay? Little bit of backhand sauce. Backhand sauce. Alright. Um what does that mean? Well I told you in the in the first shot I applied front hand English. Meaning I moved my bridge hand to place English on the cue ball. This time we're going to aim the bridge hand to centre cue ball. Okay? And we're going to use a backhand pivot. Right? So some pros actually do this and some good shots do it. Um it's not unheard of. The back end English kind of takes some of the deflection out of the shot. Um so let's look at what backhand English looks like. So I'm going to line up the cut here. I'm going to hit center ball here. Right there. Line up the cut. And now I'm going to do a little pivot right there about two tips or so and watch what happens. Right? Perfect. Okay. Now a lot of you players are like backhand English. That's the worst thing ever. You're never supposed to do that. Blah blah blah blah blah. Okay. Uh well you'd be wrong because there are a lot of good players including pros that do use backhand English from time to time on certain shots but they do it with precision and purpose. They know what the heck they're doing. Uh if you watch Efren and and Earl Strickland and and those guys especially back in the day. They would do some funky non-traditional things on the pool table sometimes but they knew what they were doing. Okay they practiced they knew what they were doing. Sometimes their stroke was not perfect. Okay? Like what you think the training stroke should be. Um they would do some alternative things every now and then for certain shots okay? So I prefer to play front hand English. I think you get a little bit more precision. Um on on where you can place the cue ball for me anyways. But backhand English is an option for certain shots guys. Alright guys. This corner's blocked now. So we need to take the eight over here to this corner which means we need to play this position window anywhere from here to here okay in this triangle right here that's our position window okay so some of you might say just hit it hard with top left and come off three rails and work your way back and if you can do that three or four times in a row without scratching in the sides I'll tip my hat to you I prefer to do a pinch shot at featherweight okay going to feather this in I'm going to hit as much of that six as possible I'm going to let the spin induce throw take it to the pocket and we'll Try to feather it in. We'll try to get into this zone here. Check it out. Okay. Perfect. Perfect.
