about
Have you ever wished you could shield your younger self from the past and bear the burden yourself? It's a dichotomy really. The you that believes you could bear it wouldn't exist without the trauma your younger self had experienced. That's the feeling this song captures for me.
The song takes us through the story of a girl who's trying her best to put up fences and walls around her younger self, but in all her efforts, she realises all she can do is look back with kindness and love.
lyrics
Don’t you know how I feel about you, can’t you read my mind like I can read yours
Won’t you take a walk with me by the riverside, I’ll make you a castle out of stones
And I’ll make a fence out of barbed wire and rye something else that will keep them out
And you’ll sit in the middle on your throne with a crown of daisies and you can cry, oh you can mourn
Her foundations are strong, oh they’re rooted in the riverbed, don’t you dare kick them down
there’s soldiers at the door, oh it’s too late to stop them now, let your guard down
Never surrender
You can’t break me
You can shiver in the cold
Kneel before us in the river
And I’ll make a fence out of barbed wire and rye something else that will keep them out
And you’ll sit in the middle on your throne with a crown of daisies and you can cry, oh you can mourn
Sit on your throne
You can mourn
I’ll always be near
You can break me in case of emergency
