358 reactions | Cabbage Molagootal - Cabbage & veggies daal with coconut 🌱🥥, a palakkad iyer style recipe. One of the most comforting meals for me is Molagootal with steamed rice & the raw banana curry in tamarind (recipe posted a couple days ago). Try these out and let me know how you liked them 💕 🥥 this is a mild gravy & usually eaten with a spicy/ sour veggie dish or lemon piickle on the side. Pappadam optional ;) 🥥 this gravy will thicken as it rests so don’t keep it too thick while cooking. Washed & chopped veggies - 3 cups green cabbage finely chopped around 1/2 cup green peas 1 cup diced carrots 1 cup diced flat beans (avarekkai) 1 cup diced potatoes (or yam/ chenai or a mix of potatoes & yam) salt to taste 1/2 teaspoon turmeric 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder a little less than 2 cups water Cooked dal - around 1/2 cup Toor dal (or toor dal & moong dal mixed) pressure cooked with a little salt & pinch turmeric. Masala - 1 Cup fresh grated coconut 1 tablespoon Cumin Seeds a few pepper corns
couple of tablespoons of water to grind In a deep pan, take the chopped veggies. Add salt, turmeric powder, red chili powder & water. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to medium, cover & and cook the veggies till soft (around 10-15 minutes). Masala - Grind coconut, pepper corns, cumin seeds, a little water in a mixer jar into a paste.
Add the cooked & mashed toor dal and the coconut masala into the veggies and stir well. Add a little more water to get the desired consistency. Allow it to boil for a minute and turn off the flame
Tempering (Phoran/ Phodni) - In a small frying pan, add coconut oil. Add mustard seeds and allow it to sputter. Then, add split urad dal and red chili and curry leaves saute till the dal turns golden brown color. Add curry leaves Turn off the flame and add the tempering to the Molagootal. Enjoy 💕✨
