STRENGTH LIES IN UNITY from Stephen Savitsky

W

hile I realize that you will be reading this message in December, know that it is October 30th as I write it. Today was the first day of the funerals for the 11 victims of the terrible antiSemitic attack in the city of Pittsburgh. This attack has shaken us to the core and made us realize once again that anti-Semitism is unfortunately still a part of our society. It is very difficult to understand anti-Semitism, as it has no real reason for its existence. It is not tied to any factor in human life except for pure and unreasoning hatred for Jews. In 1654, Asher Levy and 24 Jews arrived here to seek religious freedom. Since then, this country has been so good to us, and has allowed us the freedom to worship, to study, and to enter society on an equal footing with everyone else. This has translated into a powerful, vibrant, successful Jewish community. We have contributed so much to America with our charitable works, our social contributions, our values of education and family life, and economic prosperity. Today, America is a better country because of the Jewish immigrants who came by the millions to this country’s golden shores, gaining an opportunity we have not had since the destruction of the Second Temple. To a very large extent Israel, the national Jewish homeland, was possible due to the vibrancy of the American Jewish community and President Harry Truman’s fortitude in

“Today, America is a better country because of the Jewish immigrants who came by the millions to this country’s golden shores, gaining an opportunity we have not had since the destruction of the Second Temple.” declaring Israel a state in spite of the objections of many of his advisors. The American Jewish community and Israel have forged a unique relationship. Today, people are questioning this relationship and its long-term viability. I believe that Bnai Zion and what we stand for is exactly the right formula for success as we try to solidify the relationship between Diaspora Jews and Israel. Bnai Zion is an organization that is non-political and nonjudgmental.

BNAI ZION VOICE • Winter 2018/2019 • bnaizion.org

We welcome all those who love Israel, its people, and what it stands for. That is why we are supported not only by the Jewish community, but also very strongly by our very good friends in the Evangelical community throughout North America. We represent the ideal relationship between Israel and the Diaspora. We represent kindness, concern, and caring for those who are less fortunate than us. This is the model that should be the standard as we move forward in the future, both in Israel and in the Diaspora. We must find ways of healing the rifts, we must find ways of coming together, and we must also agree, sometimes, to disagree. Disagreeing doesn’t mean that we have any less love, respect, affection, or caring for each other. We are individuals who have our own opinions. We are educated and we are proud, but we are also allowed to think for ourselves. I am positive that in the future, the people of Israel will continue to have the relationship with the Bnai Zion Foundation that they have had over the 70 years since the state was established. We will continue to support them, we will continue to nourish them, we will continue to be nourished by them, and our strong relationship will continue to grow stronger every single day. We welcome all those who agree with our philosophy both in the Jewish and non-Jewish world to join us; become members, become involved, and become active, so that this relationship will continue for many, many years to come.

A message from Cheryl Bier, CEO & National Secretary

TO A WONDERFUL, PROSPEROUS 2019!

A

s we approach 2019, I want to thank all of our wonderful supporters for the work you have allowed us to complete this year. 2018 was a momentous year for Bnai Zion Foundation. Two of our projects – the protected emergency room at Bnai Zion Medical Center and the therapy center at Ahava Village for Children and Youth – have begun their construction. Our partnership with Yad Leah has led to several successful clothing drives this year. We also have been able to bring new Board Members and staff on board at both the National and Texas Region levels, bringing with them fresh ideas and enabling us to build our capacity to contribute to our partners in Israel. In our last issue of the Voice, we took a look back on 70 years of Israel, hearing stories from those who were around for the formation of the state. We have a lot to be proud of as we look back on our history, and a lot to be excited about as, in this issue, we look toward Israel’s future. A recent report from the World Economic Forum ranked Israel the top country for growth of innovative companies and attitude toward entrepreneurial risk, spending the highest percentage of their GDP on Research and Development. From advances in medical procedures and irrigation technologies to social change, Israel is an incredible incubator for innovation – and our projects are no exception. This magazine will show you how our projects are making strides to better serve their communities, Israel, and the world. You’ll learn how Bnai Zion Medical Center is updating their facilities to keep their patients safe, offer the best birth experience in the Middle East, and remain on the forefront of innovative treatment. You’ll read about the programs that Israel Elwyn and Ahava Village for Children and Youth have put in place to help those in their care, and which have served as a model for similar organizations in Israel and beyond. You’ll hear about Ma’ale Adumim’s new program to help seniors and young families in the community help each other. Finally, you’ll find out how Yad Leah went from the contents of one closet to a system of 23 communities across Israel – and what they hope to accomplish next. We are also looking forward to the future of Bnai Zion. If 2018 was a great year, we plan to make 2019 even better! Our project to expand the Yuvalim center in Ma’ale Adumim plans to begin construction in the coming months, and, God willing, we will be holding a ribbon cutting for our new therapy center in the Spring. With many of our current projects nearing their completion, our board will be meeting soon to discuss some incredible new projects to undertake as we move forward.

“ A recent report from the World Economic Forum ranked Israel the top country for growth of innovative companies and attitude toward entrepreneurial risk... From advances in medical procedures and irrigation technologies to social change, Israel is an incredible incubator for innovation — and our projects are no exception.”

I wish all of you a healthy and happy Chanukah, and all the best in the coming year.

Bnai Zion

MEDICAL CENTER Building the Best Possible Medical Care A Look at Bnai Zion Medical Center’s Newest Improvement Projects

B

nai Zion Medical Center is already renowned across Israel for its advanced treatments and patient care. Ever-focused on improving outcomes for its patients, Bnai Zion Medical Center is constantly employing new, innovative techniques in its various units. It has consistently been given the highest ratings in national patient satisfaction surveys and provides many lifesaving treatments that are not available in other hospitals in the region. Some improvements, however, require significant renovations to the medical center itself. Here are some of the big projects that the medical center is currently working to implement in order to better serve the people of Haifa and Northern Israel: 6

Construction has begun on the Protected Emergency Room The last missile of the Second Lebanon War in 2006 struck Bnai Zion Medical Center. It was a miracle that no one was injured, and from that moment on it became clear that serious action needed to be taken to keep both patients and staff safe. Since then, the medical center has been working to raise funds for the construction of a protected and fortified Emergency Room and underground hospitalization unit that are protected from missiles and from chemical and biological weapons. With help from the Health Ministry, as well as Bnai Zion supporters and others donating in Israel and the US, this vital medical project for

the northern region was recently launched, although more funding is needed. Before Rosh Hashanah this year, drilling began on the site of the new emergency room. Providing the best birth experience in the Middle East Already highly sought-after by expectant mothers for excellence in care for both mother and baby, the medical center is committed to making giving birth there the best experience possible. The medical center is in the process of building a new maternity department that will be spacious and equipped with the best technologies and amenities. There will be eight delivery rooms, an operating room, a reception

BZMC by the Numbers #1 in patient satisfaction in national surveys and registration area, maternity emergency care, and a waiting area for the family. These new delivery rooms promise to be the most beautiful and modern in the Middle East. This improvement project is yet another sign of Bnai Zion Medical Center’s commitment to the field of women’s health. Caring for patients with blood diseases The medical center is also expanding their unit in Hemato-Oncology. This new institute will offer outpatient services to those suffering from malignant and benign blood diseases, including chemotherapy for cancer patients who do not need hospitalization. Additionally, supportive care will be given to patients who are between treatments. Bnai Zion Foundation is proud to continue its support of the Bnai Zion Medical Center, which strives always to provide patients with the best medical care and to lead the way in medical research and excellence.

Ahava Village for Children and Youth

AHAVA VILLAGE

Building a Foundation for a Healthy Future Ahava Village is Changing the Standard for Residential Care in Israel and Beyond

L

ong-time Bnai Zion supporters know that Ahava Village does amazing work to help children heal from their trauma and build foundations for a healthy life. Some may not know, however, that Ahava Village is used as a model for other programs in Israel and abroad. Here are some of their most replicated programs: Creating a Home In 1991, Ahava switched from a traditional residential model to a homecare unit model, in which a couple raises Ahava residents alongside their own children, modeling healthy family dynamics and home life. There are no dining halls or clothing warehouses; each family cooks and eats together, and each child has designated space for their belongings. This helps minimize feelings of alienation and institutionalization, while building the children’s sense of belonging and understanding of healthy relationships. Since then, the model has been adopted by other institutions in Israel and abroad, and it is recognized as one of the most successful and effective models for caring for at-risk children. Rebuilding Damaged Relationships Through Sports Over the past 10 years, Ahava has developed a program to improve relationships between children and their biological fathers: a fatherchild soccer team. This method

8

brings fathers who often struggle with traditional talk therapy into the therapeutic process through an activity of common interest to them and their children. First, participants practice and compete on the soccer field, with a social worker observing. After the game, the social worker then holds a meeting, first with both children and fathers, and then with the fathers alone. The latter half includes conversation and instructional guidance regarding the fathers’ relationships with their children. After a few years, many similar institutions in Israel began to adopt this model. Supporting Ahava Graduates Ahava created the 18+ project

BNAI ZION VOICE • Winter 2018/2019 • bnaizion.org

about 16 years ago to serve program graduates with no family support. The homes were established after an Ahava graduate, who felt he no longer had a home, tragically took his life. The staff immediately worked to establish “warm homes” on the campus. There, graduates receive mentorship while learning how to live independently as they complete their military or national service. Even once they move out, they still receive guidance from Ahava staff. Since Ahava began presenting the 18+ project in Israel and abroad, it has been picked up widely and served as the catalyst for the establishment of 60 warm homes in Israel, managed by the Ministry of Welfare Organizations.

Preventing Sexual Assault In recent years, Ahava has developed “Muganut,” a protection and empowerment program aimed at dealing with issue of sexual assault and abuse. The program encompasses issues of public awareness as well as supervision of students. Each child at Ahava has a framework of supervision, whether they are considered at risk of being assaulted or of harming others. An important aspect is a continuous and open dialogue regarding safety, respect for others, and preventing harm to peers. The program has been very successful. It has been presented in the Knesset and at many national gatherings, and many professional organizations have attempted to adapt the program to their own needs.

Jacob’s Story

W

hen Jacob came to Ahava, he was incredibly anxious, introverted, and spoke little Hebrew. He had lost his parents at age 6, and grew up in a Ukrainian orphanage until he was brought to Israel at 11. Ahava placed Jacob in a home care unit with warm, attentive caregivers who worked hard to understand his needs and struggles. He was assigned a Russian-speaking social worker and psychologist, who worked to treat his anxiety and advance his social and educational growth. When Jacob’s caregivers discovered he loved chess, they enrolled him in chess classes and competitions to help him gain confidence. They also encouraged him to pursue his interest in computers in high school. Jacob blossomed under this exceptional care, and was recruited to the IDF’s teleprocessing force after graduation. He excelled there, too, with support from Ahava’s 18+ project, completing an officer’s course. After five years of service, Ahava helped Jacob move into an apartment and gain funding to open his own business. Jacob is getting married soon, and is excited to fulfill his dream of having a healthy family. His story is a pure example of Ahava’s work; once a lonely, shy orphan, Jacob is now a healthy, functioning member of Israeli society.

250 children and youth are cared for in Ahava’s programs

Ma’ale Adumim

MA’ALE ADUMIM Stronger Together: A New Program for Ma’ale Adumim’s Seniors New Community Project Matches Seniors with Young Couples

M

a’ale Adumim is a warm community, with many people working day and night to make it a better place to live. Because of this, the city’s community service department has devised a new program to connect members of the community who can provide aid and comfort to each other: the community’s senior citizens, many of whom live far from their children, and young and middle-aged couples, who may live apart from their parents and extended families.

In this program, senior citizens who do not have their own families nearby are paired with a family in their close vicinity to become adopted “family members.” The elderly person and the young family form a mutual support network, providing each other with regular support and taking care of each other in emergencies. For example, the family might visit the older person and help them with their shopping regularly, and bring them a hot meal or pick up medicine from the pharmacy if they are ill. In return, the elderly person might be willing to watch the child after school 10

or babysit during a family emergency. “My expectation is that relationships will develop that are not dependent on the program, and thus the ties within our community will be further strengthened,” says Anat Haberman, Director of Ma’ale Adumim’s Community Services Department. Many of the 750 seniors who currently frequent the Yuvalim Center do not have nearby family and will benefit tremendously from this new program. While adopt-a-grandparent programs are common in both Israel and in America, they are typically considered one-way acts of kindness – the families or individuals provide care for an elderly counterpart, and gain only the satisfaction of having done a good deed. This program is unique in that it suggests a partnership of equals, with each supporting the other and gaining from the relationship. This innovative program will provide seniors with a sense of ownership in addition to social interaction and assistance.

“ My expectation is that relationships will develop that are not dependent on the program, and thus the ties within our community will be further strengthened.”

Israel Elwyn

ISRAEL ELWYN

and People with Disabilities Together, Leading the Way

I

srael Elwyn, now in its 35th year, is known as a leader in caring and advocating for people with disabilities in Israel and abroad. Israel Elwyn’s programs impact the lives of thousands of individuals with intellectual and other disabilities. Throughout the years, programs that Israel Elwyn set up as pilots, such as youth transition to adulthood, supported employment in the competitive job market (both as groups and individuals), retiree day centers, and self-advocacy for people with intellectual disabilities, have been adopted by other organizations and endorsed by multiple levels of government. Its programs are particularly innovative because of the way they center the input and self-advocacy of their service recipients, treating them as partners. Israel Elwyn initiated the Patt (work development) Forum with other organizations that are also promoting employment for people with disabilities and is a member of other

12

forums in relevant fields of operation. Israel Elwyn has played an active role in pushing for government action through regulations and legislation on subjects such as: • t he direct employment of individuals with disabilities in the competitive job market, with the same benefits as their colleagues • t he requirement that the workforces of private and public employers with at least 100 employees include 5% who are individuals with disabilities • t he ability of people with disabilities to work without losing their disability benefits • t he right of individuals to influence their guardianship status In addition to working with other organizations in Israel, Israel Elwyn receives requests from organizations in the United States, Canada, South America, and elsewhere to share the organization’s vast

knowledge in its fields of operation. The organization frequently participates in conferences and seminars in Israel and abroad, both to learn about the newest programs and research and to share their own successful programs. One such program is Israel Elwyn’s National Self-Advocacy Project for people with intellectual disabilities. Operated in close collaboration with another Israeli nonprofit, the project has, for the first time trained, 120 self-advocates with intellectual disabilities. They are active at the local and national level and have a far-reaching influence on policies and legislation – a tremendous leap forward in terms of empowering people with disabilities. Bnai Zion is proud to support an organization that is making such strides in changing how we treat people with disabilities, and we look forward to watching Israel Elwyn continue to make innovative changes for many years to come.

afna Galon is a 34-year old Haifa resident who has been using Israel Elwyn’s support services for the past 12 years. After graduating from high school, Dafna trained in Israel Elwyn’s continuum of vocational programs, including working as an assistant secretary at the organization’s Beresin Occupational Training Center in Haifa.

4,500 people receive services from Israel Elwyn annually 1,100 people found job placements through Israel Elwyn in 2018

In the last 18 months, Dafna has successfully been employed at two jobs, with support from an Israel Elwyn job coach. At the Elma Arts Complex Luxury Hotel in Zichron Ya’akov, she spends four days per week working in the cafeteria and in food services. She spends one day per week at her second job, performing filing and other clerical tasks in an accountant’s office in Haifa. Dafna uses public transportation to reach both jobs and is known for her punctuality, willingness to take on responsibility, and motivation. Dafna notes, “I like having two different kinds of work and enjoy them both.” Dafna takes part in a variety of activities in her community, including a theater group that puts on a show every year. She also enjoys traveling around Israel and overseas, both with community groups and with her family.

Dafna is one of the over one thousand people who receive Israel Elwyn’s continuum of vocational services, beginning with Occupational Training Centers, where individuals are offered the opportunity to enhance their employment skills. The program includes study in areas relevant to the world of work, support services, and various professional treatments. Staff members also assist and guide employers who hire individuals with disabilities, as well as helping employees with maintaining and developing their careers. These services, available throughout Israel, help hundreds of individuals join the job market each year in jobs which provide real value to them as well as to society at large.

Yad Leah

YAD LEAH

From One Closet to 23 Communities How Yad Leah has grown since its inception—and where it’s headed next

IT STARTED WITH A SINGLE CLOSET.

K

aren Thaler was visiting her parents in Teaneck, NJ. They were cleaning out their closets, and Karen decided to bring some clothing back home for her friends and neighbors in Israel. Only once she started distributing the clothes did she realize the depth of poverty in her neighborhood. That’s when she and her friend, Jessica Katz, decided to start a small chesed project together. Jessica would collect clothing in her community for Karen to bring back with her when she came to visit. “The more we collected, the more we realized people wanted to give,” says Jessica, “and the more she distributed, the more people needed.” At first, Yad Leah operated out of Karen’s home in Beitar Illit. But Karen’s community has a very narrow range of clothing that fit into their religious and social norms. They needed to decide what to do with clothing that didn’t fit those needs and, more importantly, whom their organization would serve.

“We decided to be there for all of Israel. We moved out of the community and, slowly, through networking, were able to grow to the point where we are now serving 23 communities.” While making inroads in those communities took a lot of time, Yad Leah has expanded their efforts in the US immensely over the last 3 years, in part through Bnai Zion Foundation’s support. They have moved to a dedicated warehouse with a volunteer center, engaged over 2,000 volunteers in packing sessions, and hired 2 full-time workers to process the rest of the clothing to be sent to Israel. “We send containers to Israel about 6 times a year, and each community gets deliveries about 3 times a year. They have to make the clothing last from delivery to delivery. But if the need exceeds what we’ve sent them, they’ll just run out. At that point they have to hang a closed sign on the door, and that’s the situation that we desperately want to avoid.”

“ We decided to be there for all of Israel. We moved out of the community and, slowly, through networking, were able to grow to the point where we are now serving 23 communities.”

SARIT’S STORY by Karen Thaler, Yad Leah’s Israel Director

A

s I left synagogue on Rosh Hashanah morning, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and saw Sarit, beaming, with her five children in tow.

Sarit’s husband had left her over a year ago. I never asked what happened, but I know she works long hours to make ends meet as a secretary in a local school. With five growing children and limited income, she is a regular at our town’s Yad Leah thrift shop, which I oversee. With moist eyes, she thanked me repeatedly for the school and holiday clothing that she had purchased for pennies at Yad Leah. We talked a little while longer before she embraced me and we parted. As the family walked away, I recognized the children wearing the clothes that had just recently arrived from America and which I had arranged on our shelves: Yael’s shimmery white top, the 5 year old twins’ matching sweaters, little Miriam’s dress, baby Moshe’s hat and blanket. Walking down the street, I observed a certain contentment in their demeanor that only comes with a kind of confidence and comfort a person has with oneself.

Yad Leah by the Numbers 23 communities receive clothing from Yad Leah 7,000 boxes of clothing - worth approximately $5 million - are sent to Israel every year $36 – what it costs to ship a box of clothing 2 warehouse workers, 1 part time administrative staff, and 1,000+ volunteers yearly 10,000+ people benefit from Yad Leah’s work

I returned home elated. Despite all Sarit’s challenges, Yad Leah had enabled her family to usher in the New Year with joy and dignity. Jessica and Karen are working to be able to increase their shipments to Israel in order to sustain their existing communities with a continual supply. They also hope to expand into more communities, including Ma’ale Adumim and the children at Ahava Village. In order to do that, Yad Leah will also need to expand every aspect of their US operations. With Yad Leah’s hard work and the support of the Bnai Zion family, we look forward to seeing how the organization will continue to grow.

HEART FOR ZION

Building Bridges for Israel’s Future HFZ Cultivates a Love of Israel, One Trip at a Time

T

his October, a group of Evangelical Christian pastors from Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, and Illinois joined Heart for Zion for a mission to Israel, led by NY Gala Honoree, Rabbi Elie Abadie, M.D. and his wife, Estie. It was a transformative and meaningful experience for all who attended, contributing to Heart for Zion’s goal of solidifying a love of Israel in America’s Christian communities. The group spent the first four days of the tour based in Jerusalem. In addition to connecting with their own faith by visiting sites such as The Garden Tomb, Mount of Olives, Gethsemane, Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and the Christian Quarter, the pastors gained a deep understanding and appreciation of the Jewish people’s history in the land of Israel. Through conversation with Rabbi Abadie and others, they

16

learned more about our connection to the land, from God’s promise to Abraham to the miraculous birth of the modern State of Israel. This history was brought to life with tours of the Old City, the Tower of David, Hezikaya’s water system,

safe residential space for children who have experienced abuse and neglect. They were welcomed with a delicious lunch followed by an in depth tour of the facility. The group met with a wonderful couple who serve as surrogate parents to 13 children who reside at Ahava. 170 children live in these types of family units, learning by example what a healthy family looks like. They also visited the emergency center on campus and the brand new apartments for those young adults who need extra support after graduating from the program. After spending the night in Tiberias, the group awoke to a beautiful view overlooking the Sea of Galilee. Sailing on the Galilee provided a spiritual start to a full day spent visiting Christian holy sites in the area. After the tour ended, all reflected upon the bonds of friendship that had been formed through this educational, eye-opening, and enlightening experience. Everyone was extremely grateful for the oncein-a-lifetime opportunity Bnai Zion had so generously provided them. “Linda and I cannot thank you enough for giving us the privilege to experience the Holy Land,” said Pastor Russel Hosey of Bartlesville First Church of the Nazarene. “You

Over 250 guests came out to the Museum of Jewish Heritage to support Bnai Zion’s work, raise funds, and honor four individuals who have truly embodied Bnai Zion’s ideals. The four esteemed Honorees included Rabbi Elie Abadie, M.D., Founding Rabbi of Manhattan East Synagogue and Founder and Head of School of The Sephardic Academy of Manhattan; Kenneth Abramowitz, Managing General Partner and co-Founder of NGN Capital and Founder of SaveTheWest.com; Mark Langfan, Managing Partner of The Langfan Company, a Senior Fellow of the London Center, and the Arutz Sheva Correspondent to the UN; and William K. who received the French Legion of Honor Medal. The gala, which started with a reception at noon, gave attendees a chance to mingle before settling into their seats for the upcoming speeches while enjoying a buffet lunch. These four distinguished Honorees each received an award, as well as standing ovations for their outstanding contributions to their respective fields in a room packed with individuals from all backgrounds and across all religious, financial, and political spectrums. Ambassador Dani Dayan, Consul General of Israel in New York, was in attendance, and he gave a rousing speech about Israel’s solidarity with the Jews of the diaspora in the wake of rising anti-Semitism and the shooting in Pittsburgh. “I have never shared so many common values and beliefs than

National President Stephen Savitsky spoke beautifully about Bnai Zion’s ability to bring together people from across the religious and political spectrum. Acknowledging the stunning view of the Statue of Liberty from the museum, he said: “That’s our mission. Give us your tired and your poor. Give us people in Israel who need our help—because regardless of politics, regardless of religious belief, we come together to work for the children, for the people, and for the State of Israel. We are the answer to Jewish unity in the world, at a time when we need Jewish unity so badly.”

We are the answer to Jewish unity in the world, at a time when we need Jewish unity so badly.” Other speakers included Cheryl Bier, CEO, who spoke about our power to unite in the face of tragedy and rally around our common cause of our love of Israel, and George Schaeffer, Chairman, who reminisced about Bnai Zion’s incredible work over his 53 years of involvement in the organization.

“This was our best event yet,” says Cheryl Bier. “I was so happy to have such movers and shakers in the room, including our amazing honorees and emcee Harry Adjmi. With everything going on, it was wonderful to have the chance to celebrate Israel in an environment without a political or religious agenda.”

The program ended with an intriguing performance from Mentalist Oz Pearlman, who captivated guests with his “mind-reading”, guessing everything from Master of Ceremonies Harry Adjmi’s favorite dessert to what color or celebrity various guests around the room were thinking about. Afterwards, the guests retired to the cocktail room for dessert, where Senior Vice President Rebecca Harary led the drawing of an exquisite auction with exciting prize packages, all donated in support of Bnai Zion Foundation.

Thank you to all of our guests, and we look forward to seeing you again next year!

Cheryl Bier and Rebecca Harary Visit Our Projects

T

his October, CEO Cheryl Bier and Senior Vice President Rebecca Harary visited five of Bnai Zion’s projects. It was Rebecca’s first time visiting our projects, and it left quite an impression.

A Visit from Board Member Dr. Jack Goldman & Esther Goldman by Esther Goldman

D

uring our recent visit to Israel, we had the opportunity to visit two of Bnai Zion’s projects. In Ma’ale Adumim, it was amazing to see how big a difference Bnai Zion’s support makes in the city’s cultural and social systems. At the Cultural Center Bnai Zion built, citizens can enjoy sophisticated musical and theatrical performances in a 600seat auditorium that could rival any other facility in Israel. At the Musical Conservatory, a very dedicated staff teaches young students to play classical instruments. Bnai Zion also supports the local library, which contributes so much to both the children of Ma’ale Adumim and their parents, many of whom are new immigrants from Ethiopia. There, we met Mayor Benny Kashriel, who thanked the organization for enriching the lives of all the citizens. There are also 4,000 elderly residents living in Ma’ale Adumim, many of whom are Holocaust survivors. We joined in on some of the programming for senior citizens at the Yuvalim Center, where the singing, arts and crafts, and other activities brought smiles to their faces. We also stopped at Israel Elwyn in Jerusalem, which provides housing and programming for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. They live in apartments with 5 or 6 other residents, rather than a more institutional setting, and are given dignity and love by the amazing staff. Very often these individuals could be neglected by society and even by their families, but because of Israel Elwyn they are able to live meaningful lives. We are so grateful to have had the chance to see Bnai Zion’s work firsthand!

“I never expected to encounter the overwhelming flood of emotions I experienced when I visited each site,” Rebecca said.”I saw firsthand how each and every day we are saving, enriching, supporting, and uplifting the lives of thousands of Israelis, with a level of compassion I have never encountered in my over 20 years of nonprofit experience. I am humbled by this incredible experience, yet empowered by my increased level of inspiration at the same time.” “Each time I visit our projects, it renews my level of excitement and passion for Bnai Zion’s mission,” said Cheryl. “It’s especially amazing to experience with someone who has never been before; it allows me to see what we are doing in a whole new light. It’s incredibly gratifying to see the lives we are changing for the better, from the children of Ahava Village to the Holocaust survivors served by the Yuvalim Center. You really get to see how Bnai Zion makes a difference!”

Annual Texas Gala Unites Guests from Across the Spectrum Bnai Zion Honors Israel Supporters from Near and Far

Butch and Julieann Hartman, Dr. Amnon Rofe, Anita Weinstein, and Pastors Cyd and Ricky Texada

O

n Sunday evening, November 18, Bnai Zion Texas Region held its Annual Gala, with proceeds supporting the construction of Bnai Zion Medical Center’s protected Emergency Room. Zionists from all over the Dallas area and as far as Houston, Washington, D.C., and New York came together in support of Bnai Zion Foundation and its honorees. The Gala was especially meaningful as the medical center’s CEO, Dr. Amnon Rofe, will be retiring this July. The evening’s honorees were Butch & Julieann Hartman, Pastors Ricky & Cyd Texada, and Anita Weinstein. Butch Hartman, a talented animator whose work includes Nickelodeon’s The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom, and his wife Julieann founded Hartman House, which supports people living in poverty around the world.

Ricky and Cyd Texada are the pastors of the Colleyville, TX campus of Covenant Church, which has a long history of supporting Bnai Zion. Anita Weinstein, herself a former Bnai Zion employee, is known throughout the Dallas Jewish community for her involvement in local Jewish and pro-Israel organizations. Diane Benjamin was presented with a token of appreciation for her service as Texas Region president, as her term is now up. CEO Cheryl Bier and National President Stephen Savitsky also thanked David Eisenberg, past President of both the National and Texas Region Boards, for his years of dedication to Bnai Zion. Stephen Savitsky warmly addressed the close to 230 in attendance, stressing the importance of unity between all who love IsraelJews and Christians alike.

Looking back on the evening, Stephen said, “The event was electric and I feel honored to have attended. The bonding between the guests was so beautiful to experience.” Afterward, Dr. Rofe presented updates from the medical center, along with a beautiful video summarizing his 18 years as CEO. Pastor Ricky Texada inspired the crowd with a message of gratitude and giving. He noted that the Hebrew root for giving, Natan, reads the same backward or forward, signifying that when we give generously, we always receive in abundance in return. Past Texas Region President and National Board Member Larry Strauss then conducted a tremendously energetic Live Auction to purchase vital medical equipment for Bnai Zion Medical Center.

“This year’s event was incredible! What a beautiful way to say goodbye to Dr. Rofe and honor his 18 years of service at the Bnai Zion Medical Center.” When the auction concluded, Honorees Butch & Julieann Hartman gave a meaningful keynote address, after which Butch generously drew cartoons for three lucky raffle winners in the audience and presented Dr. Rofe with a special painting he created for the pediatric section of the hospital. Event chairs Summer Pailet and Barry Wernick, together with our committed Board, worked hard to make this event a great success. Honorary chairs Dr. Tim and Virginia Shepherd brought pastors from several area churches with them to become more acquainted with our work. Covenant Church’s Founding Pastor Mike Hayes and his wife, Kathy, attended in support of the Texadas and Dr. Rofe, whom they presented with a gift to commemorate his 18 years at the hospital.

6th Annual Alan Marx Memorial IFPA Pinball Fundraiser Bnai Zion Presents: The Last Suit BZ Sponsors Holocaust Film at Jewish Film Festival of Dallas

B

nai Zion Foundation once again partnered with the Jewish Community Center of Dallas this year to sponsor a film screening at the 22nd Annual Jewish Film Festival of Dallas. Out of the ten compelling films presented, Bnai Zion chose to sponsor the closing night screening of The Last Suit. The film depicts 88-year-old Holocaust survivor Abraham Bursztein on his journey to return to Poland in search of the friend who nursed him back to health when he returned from Auschwitz. Charming and heartfelt, The Last Suit ultimately delivers a poignant message about the enduring importance of family, friends, and honor. Dr. Zsuzsanna Ozsváth, a Holocaust studies professor at University of Texas – Dallas, presented a Q & A after the film. The theater was packed to full capacity for the screening. The Jewish Film Festival of Dallas provides a window into the Jewish experience and allows us to explore contemporary and historical themes in many different global settings. The screening also gave us the opportunity to present Bnai Zion to the greater Dallas Jewish community. Bnai Zion is proud of our partnership with the JCC and looks forward to next year’s festival.

I

n August, Bnai Zion Foundation’s Texas Region moved its offices to the 8th floor of the North Dallas Bank Tower. In celebration of its new space, the Texas Region Board of Directors held a Chanukat Habayit (dedication) on August 29. Board Member Rabbi Dan Lewin affixed mezuzahs to the office’s front door and to the door of Director of Development Debbie Tobias’s office. He recited a blessing and explained the mitzvah of a Chanukat Habayit. This lovely ceremony, which was attended by board members, community members at large, and Pastors Scott and Lydia Sigman of New Beginnings Church, was followed by a reception in the building’s conference room. We hope that the beautiful mezuzahs, a gift from our National headquarters, will bless our space and bring prosperity to Bnai Zion.
