My grandparents lived in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Appalachia and were totally self sufficient. All the folks back in those hills and valleys were for a good part of the 20th century. They knew if they were going to eat they had to grow or raise their own food and then preserve it through the winter. It was the ART of living. Now we have the luxury of doing it for the fun of it... why not give it a try.
