Le Béret is one of the most famous French couvre-chefs (hats) ever. It was originally made for working class men, then during the WW II, the beret became the enblem of French patriotism when the French Resistance adopted it. Later on, women started wearing them, as did artists and intellectuals. To the French, le béret is a symbol of France’s rural past, and remains in favour with fashionistas. Abroad though, it endures as a symbol of France.
