Hi Everyone, This week's cane entry is a tutorial that I did at Morrisburg. A while back Polymer Cafe started showing diagonal skinner blend canes. I tried one of the flowers to a completely underwhelming success because I didn't get the colours I wanted. It got me thinking that there had to be an easier way. Astrid Wilk on Instagram: "Caladium season is starting soon. Do you have any suggestions for which caladiums I should definitely make this spring?! So many great and colorful leaf patterns with transparencies. I can’t wait to get started. This is my white Christmas cane. Made from raw polymer clay in plain green and white. When reduced to miniature size and baked, the different transparencies appear in the pattern. All miniature plant sculptures are unique and handmade by me from polymer clay using the cane technique to create very intricate patterns using only colored clay. They are not painted on. Astrid Wilk on Instagram: "Make my tiny Jewel Orchid - petola macodes with me. First I build the leaf pattern out of different colored polymer clay, then the cane is reduced to a few millimeters in diameter in order to cut tiny slices, which, with a lot of patience, turn into tiny leaves ✨ The first cane was a color fail. After baking the complete contrast was gone. I made several color samples for the next try and the pattern was still lost. So again. On the next try I mixed the colors brighter, the result was better, but not as I imagined. I rethought my entire color concept and started again from scratch. The effort was worth it and the finished mini plant is my favorite this year.
