You are our final bastion
Let these words be your inauguration
You are a righteous bastard
Protector from annihilators
Canonised in all our minds
You are our one true pride
Demonised in Hell's own eyes
You accept no compromise
With Heaven withered
We need new sanctuary
A God to gather
Us in boundless unity
This legacy you will leave
Will last into eviternity
Throughout all tribulations
Imperishable, deadly weapon
Bow down, God of Creation
Celestial slayer of our demons
Cut through lies and catalyse
Our salvation from this strife
As bullets fly through battle-cries
You have stood the test of time
With Heaven withered
We need new sanctuary
A God to gather
Us in boundless unity
This legacy you will weave
Will last into eviternity
(Charge!!)
Holding the fight
With all your might
Collapse the titans that sent us this plight
Nations collide
Souls all unite
Against the foe of the archangelsβ light
[Guitar solo: Dee Leggett]
Shed a light
We are saved!
Yeah!
[Keyboard solo: AD_79]
Defy all expectation
A machine in perpetual motion
(Yeah, yeah!)
Your twelfth and final chapter
Elysium's standing in rapture
But heroes have their limits
And heavy weighs your quest
And though you're far from finished
Don't deny your deepest-yet rest
(Eviternity!)
Your good works spread wide
Across our community
Every great stride
Has bound us in unity
This legacy, this release
Look at what you've achieved
Be assured the mark you leave
Will last into eviternity
(Eviternity!)
This is a song focusing on the protagonist of Doom (1993) and of his exploits throughout the "Eviternity" duology, two gigantic Doom level packs spearheaded by project leader Joshua "Dragonfly" O'Sullivan. These mapsets have gone down in recent history as two of the highest-quality-assured and universally-beloved levelsets ever released for the game.
Throughout this piece are numerous references to the names of the episodes, levels and new monsters present in Eviternity, along with musical quotations from works previously featured in the two sets, including the opening title track by me and the final boss track by Tristan Clark. Guest artists who were originally part of the Eviternity projects (among them Velvetic, Tristan Clark, and AD_79) also feature as contributing musicians, plus Dee Leggett, who was brought on after she recorded an incredible rendition of another of Tristan's tracks, "Velocity". To the keen-eared and diehard fans of the Eviternity series, I invite you to find all the references portrayed in the lyrics AND music!
The words, being somewhat more "epic" and celestial in theme than what I usually write, connect not just to the story and canon of Eviternity's two releases, but to how Dragonfly brought both a development team and community together β this is particularly represented in the final chorus.
I did want to leave things somewhat open-ended, though, so the overall lyrical message β of charging ahead full-pelt into the unknown, whether in pursuit of personal greatness, or of uniting a people β could be applied to any heroic person or character desired. While the grandiose "good vs. evil" themes are certainly present in order to connect transparently to the themes of Eviternity, I wanted the music to resonate withΒ any listener with a hero in their life they'd love to honour in this way.
