The romantic notion that there is someone out there for everyone sent hundreds of millions of people to online dating apps last year, including Jay Wires. Trapped in a world with seemingly infinite options where temporary relationships are the norm, he decided to set himself apart by putting his profile to music with a brief jingle expressing his intentions, thus giving birth to “Illusion,” a foray into a desolate, chimerical territory, as he succinctly expresses the loneliness and hopelessness that one feels when searching for their soulmate in a landscape that feels more like a carnival’s House of Mirrors than its Tunnel of Love.
A plaintive query prefaces a punchy electronic beat, and synth layers build as Wires’ cri de coeur - raw and emotional, gives way to a chorus driven by a galloping bassline with the intensity of a racing heartbeat, and distant bells like a death knell stab you to your core, evoking that hollow feeling of loss and want. This is a story of being trapped in the confusion of a shimmering fog, with lyrics full of yearning, calling out for The One that idealism tells us is out there for each of us.
Somewhere in this barren wasteland, Jay finds himself “losing faith in destiny,” that this person may not even exist. Hope turns to cynicism, and deliciously melancholic hooks and textures fill the atmosphere with disconsolate laments, intensely conveying the exhaustion that Wires feels in this chase, one that seems futile and unending.

For far too long
Where you been?
Ooh baby, are you listenin?
Ooh ooh ooh
Save me
Help me find that spark again
Be the light I need
To lead me through the dark
Hold me
In your arms
For eternity
Tell me that you'll never leave
And change my mind

Where you been?
Ooh baby, are you listenin?

Head's been
Spinnin'
You’re just wasting my time
Where you been?
Feels like I’m chasing an illusion
Maybe
We were never meant to be
Drifting through uncertainty
Riding with the tide
Lonely
Losing faith in destiny
No more playin hide n seek
Come and change my mind
