jimpax I haven't dug into this album very deeply yet, but on first listen, it feels like a return to the outstanding releases from the 90's and 2000's.

After a self-imposed hiatus to focus on raising his daughter—who lends her talents as lead guitarist and vocalist on the track “Before The Light Takes Us”—and exploring writing and filmmaking, Josh Joplin returns to rock with GpYr (Gap Year). This album not only marks a new chapter in his career, but also reflects the personal and artistic evolution that began with his 2023 album, Figure Drawing.

Legendary artist manager Russell Carter (Matthew Sweet, Indigo Girls) says of Josh Joplin, “I am willing to bet Josh has written a bad song, but I can tell you I have never heard one—and he has never recorded one.”

Joplin’s latest full-length release, GpYr—produced by Josh Joplin and Grammy-winning producer Lorenzo Wolff (known for his work on Taylor Swift’s Midnights and Folklore)—lands somewhere between a concept album and a sonic scrapbook. It’s a story of four friends who, over one unforgettable summer and autumn, came together for a mission: to rescue Seely from a therapeutic boarding facility in remote New England. In saving her, they saved each other.
Spin Magazine says GpYr is "a collection of pop-infused gems that captures the raw energy of Joplin’s earlier works...but with the musical and lyrical layers of the older, wiser musician Joplin has become."

In my coat On winters skin I’m walking backwards over bridges To the place where we begin The cameras watch But I can’t stay long There’s a guard already approaching Waving his hands to move me on CHORUS: And if you insist How can I resist? Love is, like nothing else is The colored copies We get to keep The rest is burning up in baskets In labs where rats and monkeys sleep This house on fire This open call Has me scaling back the plans I had For climbing up this wall CHORUS BRIDGE: Like nothing else is, like nothing else is Like book sleeves on subjects like guidance Like postscripts with someone in silence Where classroom daydreams disappear Like faint notes left on a mirror Say goodbye Before you leave Keep your toothbrush wrapped in a sandwich bag And your heart rolled in your sleeve CHORUS
2.
The guardrail marks the grave Where you and I were saved Before we both gave up on god You held your breath and smiled And you woke the world awhile And we, we tied ourselves in knots Held vigil in the hall Thought stars might finally fall From the weight of wishing CHORUS You’d pull through When it hurts you, When, when it hurts you me When it hurts you, it hurts me too You rolled the silverware I stacked up plastic chairs And we, we walked around for hours To clear our heads again
Enough! Fools without a plan Lost in details We have so few CHORUS BRIDGE: I saw your text come through I nearly cracked the screen to answer back at you But like a signal lost at sea That’s it! You’d ghosted me. CHORUS
3.
They’re turning this island into a mall and They’re tearing the old house down The game closet’s empty, the ghosts are less friendly And nothing makes a sound The sound of the ache in the floorboard The absent guitar chords whose tune is One more someone I’m gonna miss The parents who loved you held it above you Clueless to their guilt There’re names out of order etched in the mortar Of every wall you built They found us resting in motion Under the ocean where we kissed One more someone I’m gonna miss And you’re one more someone I’m gonna miss One more someone I’m gonna miss BRIDGE: We drove south on the Northway The windows rolled down the whole day The miles sweep through us And the truth comes to us Like silence follows a thrill When the endings are over And you’re only just older There’s never any doubt What you take with you Won’t be the issue It’s what you’ll leave without The lengths I’d go through to show you I love you and I know you know this! You’re one more someone I’m gonna miss One more someone I’m gonna miss One more someone I’m gonna miss Seely I tell you things I want you to hear You won’t believe They’re turning this island into a mall and they’re tearing the old house down
4.
Out of time out of bed Out of order in my head Suppose we drove as far as we could And never found our way if we could Turn back around without regrets Everyday that waits forgets About me Arrive by taxi, check my bag Watch the clock and feel the lag Between now and the time we had CHORUS: Arrivals, departures It doesn’t matter whose heart hurts Goodbye Berlin I miss you every chance I can Out of luck out of mind Out of reasons to stay behind Suppose we float from where we stand Across the world and not reach land Will we still swim until we can’t Or just return home again Put on clothes and pack your bags I’m with you if they should ask CHORUS: Out of place out of fear Out of love that drew us here The bass drum daze of Ostgut whirred As we came up for air in the cold of Kreuzberg CHORUS Goodbye Berlin Goodbye Berlin Goodbye Berlin I miss you every chance I can
5.
As for me there’s is no second act I bombed out in the first So I took up drinking And nearly died of thirst Don’t count my mistakes I’ve made too many Promises to every and anyone Who’d listen to me, listen to me Listen to me! CHORUS: We’re not the only ones walking the earth alone We’re not the only ones walking the earth alone I’m with gorillas, while you’re getting stoned And so I lied to save you And so I thought I had But I just haunted this house With things I can’t take back Don’t count my mistakes I’ve made too many Promises to every and anyone Who’d listen to me, listen to me Listen to me! CHORUS Love is the weight of the world in the heart of a girl Who’s come too far to bluff Hope is the space in between the plan and the dream For a boy who’s had enough Seely take my hand X4 I’m with gorillas, I’m with gorillas X2 CHORUS

Upstate 03:20
Upstate, up here, up in the starry skies That never seem as bright As they do old and wise Like poets in the night Inspired by our loneliness We faced each other and undressed And found a splinter in the grass Everything’s changing you beautiful strange thing CHORUS: Down under ground, over clouds We’re coming up roses. Down under ground, over clouds We’re coming up roses, coming up roses Now! Now The Ides of March kiss you on the cheek Then pat’s your back and cut’s your throat Twilight clouds come on so bleak Button up your only coat! It’s gonna be a long long time Before the planets all align The tides subside and the dark days shine Everything’s changing you beautiful strange thing CHORUS Love, love doesn’t ever look down Love, love doesn’t ever look down Love, love doesn’t ever look down Love, love doesn’t ever look down Love, Love, Love, Love! Down under the ground, over the clouds/ Coming up roses now Down under the ground, over the clouds/ Coming up roses now Down under the ground, over the clouds/ Coming up roses now Down under the ground, over the clouds/ Coming up roses now Down under the ground, over the clouds/ Coming up roses

It’s been way too long Since I’ve heard you smile on The phone long distance from a state Flattened by an oceans weight Long ago, so much has changed Everything can be arranged The Ice Age is over The Ice Age is over The parking lot light Will not compromise despite Empty spaces beneath it’s post We’re the last to leave our host This motel keeps our unmade bed What’s left is ours for the road ahead The Ice Age is over The Ice Age is over The clock on the shelf Seems to think it’s always twelve I’ve got not signal the call was dropped Or maybe time has really stopped? Where we go there is no here The sun just sets and reappears And the Ice Age is over The Ice Age is over The Ice Age is over The Ice Age is over OUTRO: Here in the era where we’re both found Each in our embrace underground You and I alone know where we’re bound They’ll pull our bodies up and they’ll probe around Let’s see what they find X 2 Look at what they… We are the last ones of our kind X4 (or X6) The ice age is over, the ice age is over!
8.
I can’t un-love you. I want to, I can’t but I do We are seconds in the sun At last we’ve just begun If we’re found without a trace We fell from out of space CHORUS: Let’s pretend we aren’t ready to give up on what we’ve started Let’s say now is not forever and no one gets broken hearted Our love is, so real it’s, it’s disappearing X2 Before the light, before the light takes us I can’t un-miss you. I want to, I can’t but I do And so much happened standing still We ran against our will Swallowed pills that weren’t ours With aims beyond our powers CHORUS We’re on a scale neither weighted or true Comparing posts against the happiness of who? Don’t waste your time. Don’t waste your time The ties that bind can break us! While space expands, and stars combust Before the light takes us We take our shape, then turn to dust Before the light takes us Don’t tell us now it’s dangerous Before the light takes us We’re stones to sand, we’re iron to rust Before the light takes us There’s no one here that I can trust Before the light, before the light take us! Our Love is so real it’s…disappearing
9.
Seely's Song 04:36
Seely’s Song Look, look what they’ve done They’ve unlocked all the cages The cure for our disease Is hidden in the pages Thick with the plot of our decline Copied and collected and defined CHORUS: The more that we are, we’re not The more that we are, we’re not Take, take what you need Whatever gets you through this? There’s moments out of place No matter how we do this And they’ll point to their god and say be scared Spend your days to get yourself prepared CHORUS: Stones sit on these graves As if a bet’s been placed Seely, I tell you things I want you to hear You won’t believe When, when we were ghosts And walked through worlds Nobody sees There our secrets were safe Hidden away In memories Like notes passed in class Folded in halves I hold on to these And the lines that kill me Are ones that fill me with love “When you look back On the ones you lose track of They’re all gone or so you thought” But the more that we are, we’re not The more that we are We’re not! The more that we are, we’re not, the more that we are we’re not!
10.
We are the ones who survive And we’re coming out strong You’ll know us when we arrive And it won’t be long You brought us to term for what it’s worth But your fetish for life ends at birth If you are who you say You’ll kill us someday CHORUS: Predator and p.p.p.p.prey Predator and p.p.p.p.p.prey We are the ones who survive And we’re coming out strong You’ll know us when we arrive And it won’t be long And the stories your tell yourselves at night You had it so hard if I got this right Back in your day There was no them and they? CHORUS BRIDGE: The future is present the pressure is real It tests us. And taunts and nips at our heals Our past diagnosis it doesn’t apply We carry our symptoms and still never die We thrive. We thrive. We will thrive! We are the ones, the ones who survive/We are the ones who survive X2 We are the ones, the ones who survive/We are the ones who survive (Love doesn’t ever look down)

CD & VINYL AVAILABLE AT JOSHJOPLINGROUP.COM/GROUPETERIA

Produced by Josh Joplin and Grammy-winning producer Lorenzo Wolff (known for his work on Taylor Swift’s Midnights and Folklore as well as his own Grammy-nominated tribute to Judee Sill).

“GpYr is somewhere between a concept and a photo album,” Joplin says of his new full-length record. This album not only marks a new chapter in his career, but also reflects the personal and artistic evolution that began with his 2023 album, Figure Drawing, praised by The Washington Post’s Geoffrey Himes as “the broadest, deepest, and most balanced of his career.”

It's about a time when–over the course of a summer and autumn–four friends who will never be closer again came together, created a plan to save one of their own, Seely, from a therapeutic boarding facility in remote New England and in doing so, rescued one another.

The songs were largely taken from the discarded pieces of an auto-fictionalized musical based on Joplin's real life experiences. The play is set in Baltimore's rave and underground party scene. The story revisits a period in Josh’s young life when he and his cohorts robbed a drug dealer in order to fund a road trip to rescue their friend who was kidnapped one morning while walking home from an all-night dance.

“A gap year doesn’t necessarily mean one year–in my case it was more like ten–it just meant shifting my priorities to other things. I called this record GpYr because it has a lot to do with the story I was telling, and it also applies to me in this very moment. My daughter has now graduated college and isn’t too much older than I was when these songs take place.

For me, GpYr is like liminal space– it’s actively absorbing what was and what’s next. It is a time and a place of transition, it’s an ever-changing circumstance that waits in motion, unknowing what can be learned but absorbing knowledge nonetheless. Along the way there is transformation–if we leave it alone.”
