Gifu Prefecture is one of the 8 landlocked prefectures in Japan. Its mountainous landscape creates a beautiful backdrop to villages like “little Kyoto,” Takayama, and the UNESCO Heritage Site, Shirakawa-go, with its thatched roofs. Gifu Prefecture is a center of traditional Japanese industries like swordsmithing, and papermaking. It is also known for cormorant fishing, a technique in which birds are used to catch sweetfish.

Kakamigahara, Gifu
Kakamigahara - 各務原 - Kakamigahara City is in southern Gifu Prefecture and serves as a commuter hub to the cities of Gifu and Nagoya. Historically, the city was a post station on the Nakasendo trail that connected Tokyo and Kyoto. Kakamigahara grew as an industrial city and developed due to the presence of the Japan Self-Defense Forces. Kakamigahara has many large parks and the city even received the national Green City Planning Prize in 2005
