Original oil painting by Karen Tarlton - cityscape, NYC

 Traveled all day to NYC!
It takes trains, planes and automobiles to get here (and catching the cab was the trickiest)
but we finally made it!
Off to find a great little Italian restaurant and a jazz club.

Just a little drizzle to add sparkle to Times Square tonight!

City Lights original oil painting by Karen Tarlton impressionistic palette knife fine art

12x24
City Lights
oil
SOLD
I wanted to create sort of a foggy, or misty look so I used soft greys, blues and lavender for depth and warm pops of gold, yellow and red to really light it up! I love the look.....sort of mysterious. What city is it?  Well that's up to you!

Warm Glow of Night - Original oil painting by Karen Tarlton

20x24

Oil

Bold, chunky paint and radiant color light this one up! Getting ready for another weekend trip to California. Going to beautiful Big Sur! My husband is running the Big Sur marathon. He's excited. I'm just going to soak in the beauty, take snapshots and maybe paint a few pochades while he runs like a mad dog.

Soon I'll list some finished beach scenes. I have San Diego surfers and Santa Barbara coast scenes already in the works from last weeks trip!

Thanks for checking in and come back soon!

Night Romance

Title: Night Romance
Large Original Oil 24x36
"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for~ Georgia O'Keeffe
I like this quote for it seems I am often at a loss for words. I don't paint this large often but lately have had an urge to paint big! Huge amounts of paint on this canvas and it really lights up the room.....
I hope it inspires you!

City Rain

Title: City Rain and the Red Umbrella
Size: 20 x 24
Medium: oil on stretched canvas
This painting was a different twist on city rain. I muted my background so the people become the focal point, the main focus becoming the red umbrella. An interesting, modern rainy scene.
Holidays are only weeks away and I've been busy painting commissions! I love painting gifts and special meaningful works for everyone, especially around this time of year. I think art is the very best gift, especially if it is a painting you helped design!
Thanks for checking in and hope everyone is enjoying life!

Intoxication

Title: Bold Beautiful Bird
Size: 9 x 12
Medium: oil on stretched canvas
SOLD
I just love to paint these colorful personalities! Many layers of ocher colors and then pops of red and teal make this bird sing!

I am recovering from some tired overworked arms and had to take some time off of painting for about a week. Just have been working a bit too hard the doctor says. I guess I'm a workaholic so time off, sitting back and relaxing are really not much in my vocabulary but I'm trying.

Title: Intoxication
Size: 12 x 16
Medium: oil on stretched canvas
SOLD
Here is a piece that I love...city reflections to the extreme! Lots of paint and deep contrast of color. Both of these paintings are SOLD

The Glow of City Rain

Title: The Glow of City Rain
Size: 16 x 20
Medium: oil on stretched canvas
ABOUT THIS PAINTING:
Going on eBay auction tonight!
This painting to me really is not a specific place, but a cityscape from my imagination and from my memories of my recent trip to Paris and London. It rained a lot while we were there, but I didn't mind a bit because it made everything seem to glow that much more, especially at night. To emphasize these evening glow of the lights, I used heavy contrasts of light and dark colors, with both brush and palette knife, highlighting the reflective lights with heavier paint and pops of cobalt teal. Thanks so much for checking in and I hope you enjoy!

Night City Rain

We have more snow!!!

Title: Night City Rain

Size: 20 x 24

Medium: oil on stretched canvas

Going on auction tonight!

ABOUT THE PAINTING:

This contemporary piece is all about color and texture. Lots of thick palette knife work and vibrant color.

INSPIRATION:

We are supposed to get 30" of snow here in the DC area this weekend! Wow that's a lot for this area. Everything pretty much shuts down when it snows like this and I kind of enjoy the slower pace, and it's just beautiful. Maybe I won't be so keen tomorrow morning when I'm shoveling two feet of snow but right now I love it. I hope you all are bundled up cozy and warm with your loved ones! Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Lights in the City

Title: Lights in the City
Size: 9 x 12
Medium: Oil on stretched canvas
Contact me to purchase by check or paypal
ABOUT THIS PAINTING:
I love painting these little cityscapes! This one has very expressive and impressionistic brushwork, and a little knife too. It's not as heavy with the paint, except on the brights of the lights and taxi cabs, making them really pop out, literally. Lots of fun to paint and I'll be painting more night cityscapes for February! This painting is small enough to fit about anywhere, and I might take it over to the gallery soon....I hope you enjoy it!

Manhattan, New York City

Title: Manhattan, New York City
Size: 16 x 20
Medium: Oil on stretched canvas

Only a 7 day listing. Contact me for further information or commission

ABOUT THIS PAINTING:
I think I really hit home on this New York scene. Sometimes everything just falls into place quickly and easily when I paint, and other days it's more of a struggle. Everything from the composition to the color was fluid and smooth on this painting and based on photos from a recent trip. I used large swipes of palette knife and soft brushwork. It glows with vivid golds and reds and really has a New York night time feel.
I love this painting in a wide black frame!

Times Square, New York Rain

This one already SOLD....before it was all the dry!

Title: Times Square, New York Rain
Size: 24 x 30
Medium: Oil on stretched canvas

Last night and all day yesterday we had a huge blizzard and I was watching the snow fall while painting a series of NY paintings and I had a wonderful time. I had classical Christmas music playing, my daughters baking cookies and memories of my last NY trip in my head. I love NY and love to paint scenes from this city. This is the largest of them all and it is specifically....Times Square. I used a lot of oil with my favorite palette knife and so it has a lot of wonderful texture and broken color. I don't paint this large very often, but once in a while it is a joy, especially when it is NY!

A Splash of Color in the Rain

Will be offered on eBay for a short while!
PAINTING and INSPIRATION:
It's that time of year! It's bundle up and break out your umbrella time here in Virginia and I love to paint rain this way. This original has lots of texture and broken color and is my favorite rain painting in awhile. I hope you can zoom in on some of the great textures in this one.
I hope everyone has a great holiday with family and friends. Thanks for looking!

Times Square Cabs at Night

Title: Times Square Cabs at Night
Size: 24 x 30
Medium: Oil on gallery wrapped canvas

See eBay auction tonight for purchase. Because of the time a large cityscape takes, I don't paint a scene like this for eBay very often. I don't expect this one to last long!
SOLD!!!

PAINTING:
This painting is touchably textured and layered with deep oil color. I applied an abstract underpainting and the city began to emerge. I began sculpting with extreme color and texture, brighter than reality, to capture the intense energy of Times Square and create this distinct 3-dimensional effect.
INSPIRATION:
My inspiration often comes from my favorite places I travel to and NY is one of the most inspirational. I hope to offer you an escape from reality and make you smile with this painting. It was a blast to create!
