Paris Cafes

7x9 watercolor over ink line sketch on paper in sketchbook done last weekend for another WetCanvas Weekend Drawing Event as hosted by Maureen. I used STA Lictin 0.3 and 0.5 ink pens in Masters Touch book which was about 1 hour. Adding color later made the cafe scene on a Paris street come alive in this cityscape. COPYRIGHT 2024 Kay Smith

Hanging Lamp

9×12 watercolor and Brusho on Grumbacher 140 lb cold press paper sketched yesterday then painted today from some of my cityscape street lamp photos. The old stone and stucco walls accent the lamp or light metal well. Dry brush and use of black Brusho were put in at the end for textural effects. COPYRIGHT 2022 Kay Smith

Twilight in the City

15x11 watercolor and gouache on Fabriano 140 lb rough paper done a few days ago of an imaginary city street at twilight. I first painted it in watercolor and was not reading right so put mostly white, peach, blue and pale yellow gouache washes over it. Highlights are the street lights glow and reflections. English Storefronts

16x12 watercolor on Italia 140 lb cold press paper done this afternoon for a timed event online.  I did crop other buildings from this townscape in England, focusing mainly upon the abundant flowers decorating the street and storefronts.  It was painted wet on dry.

Japanese Street

8.5x11.5 mixed media on matboard finished yesterday, a street scene in Japan.  Magic colored pencils used to sketch followed by Caran D' Ache watersoluble wax crayons and acrylics as top layer.  Since I lived in Japan several months this subject matter was just perfect.  The women talking under their parasols gives this a cozy and friendly touch.

New Orleans Skinny Building

11x7 watercolor done last week of October, a street scene in New Orleans, on Kilimanjaro 140 lb cold press paper and Daniel Smith paints.  There were no figures in the photo so I added a lone guy at the doorway of the skinny building.  Ref courtesy Valri/Wet Canvas.

Downtown

9x6.25 watercolor pencil sketch with watercolor done over the weekend on Lanaquarelle 140 lb hot press paper.  The photo from downtown somewhere had to be finished in 2 hour time limit so my painting time was one hour, 10 minutes.  I liked the cute couple holding hands wearing their green and red complementary colors while a guy seated on the right past the hotel sign was watching them stroll along.

Spanish Town after JM Parramon

14x11 watercolor on 140 lb cold press Kilimanjaro paper done last month while studying earlier watercolorists' cityscapes (after Jose Parramon).  In this scene it had been raining in Spain and buildings and figures are very abstracted.  You can see some reflections in the rainy street.

Border Town

14x10 watercolor on Stonehenge 140 lb hot press paper, an imaginary scene done Sunday while in the southwest on a brief trip. The hot sun is a major player in these border towns along with the dust and a lot of people out shopping.

Belize Umbrellas

15x11 watercolor on 140 lb cold press Saunders paper, with Daniel Smith paints.  Using a marketplace photo from our trip to Belize several years ago, I painted this townscape rapidly using only bright colors at the center of interest.  The background was a wash of manganese blue except for the white of the paper showing.  I like the open market vendors selling their wares.

Virginia Village Lamps

12x9 watercolor on Fluid 140 lb cold press paper drawn yesterday and painted today using Daniel Smith and American Journey pigments.  This is a cropped reference of a townscape that is shown here from current weekend drawing event on WetCanvas with Li Newton hosting.  Since I love lamp posts and lanterns this view favors them as a focal point.  A #14 round brush was used also.

Pocket Park

9.5x7 watercolor and ink on Ecosystem sketchbook painted yesterday after last Tuesday's plein air event downtown Big Spring.  Sketched in ink using Micron 01 pen, this lamp post and tree scene indicate the crisp autumn air showering the town's sidewalks with fallen leaves and debris.  Late afternoon shadows are streaking diagonally across the very old brick building behind in the background.  Someone had planted cotton seeds in the raised flowerbeds along with squash, I guess for that country touch!

Spain Shoppers

8.5x7.5 watercolor on Kilimanjaro 140 lb cold press paper done today as part of the weekend drawing event on WetCanvas! in which participants have 2 hours to do a drawing or painting using featured references.  The ten photos we had were provided by host Susan.  I loved the high color contrasts of blue against orange in this cityscape.
