Rainy Day Birds

5.5x8.5 mixed media on Master's Touch sketchbook 80 lb paper done today. For these imaginary birds I used Micron 01 pen to sketch, then added Koh-I-Noor multilead colored pencils. White wax crayon used to indicate snow. Black Brusho wc crystals by ColourCraft (UK) for the dark feathers then Rosa Gallery/Ukraine burnt sienna watercolors for tan/brown. Lastly for the shadows and background Daniel Smith's Moonglow was used loose and wet. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2024

Sparrows and Pigeons

9x12 acrylic inks on Canson 140 lb cold press paper done a few days ago for an online challenge. We were given a curved line, a long diagonal line, and two short diagonals and told to invent an artwork using the lines, so this is what I came up with that fit the bill.  No photo references used so it is totally imaginary.

Spring Sparrows

11.75x15.5 acrylics on gessoed matboard, a demo done a couple years ago for Midland TX Palette Club. These sparrows are enjoying a sunny morning sitting on a branch.  With largely neutral colors you can still tell the foliage has not yet turned yellow green in spring.

Chorus Line birds

12.5x15 alcohol inks on paper finished today, another one in my bird experimentation series.  With this, I've used the same bird sketch as before, tracing off each one then reversing the one on far left.  Each is using the design principle of variation of the elements of color, line, size, shape, texture to name some.  Blue hues using two inks were put in first then allowed to mix with alcohol 91% and blending solution.  Each bird was painted in various browns, greys, and  goldens.  Line was added by putting a drop of ink on the tip of a chopstick.  No pencil used.

Birds on Wires

Here is my one hour demo lesson done yesterday morning for the West TX Art Guild in Colorado City, Texas.  I used two photos of birds on phone line wires right outside my studio door. It is painted on Kilimanjaro watercolor 140 lb paper and is 15x22.  WTAG had a very nice turnout and I did sell a small scarlet macaw parrot painting.  My demo was held at Carolyn Walker's studio next door to Leada Wood's Studio Twenty, off Interstate 20.  This was my first time to paint insulators; one could get quite creative with the large sky!
