Alto Clouds

5.5x8.5 watercolor on sketchbook 80 lb paper using Master's Touch. This is from a photo I took in the Alto Lakes parking lot of menacing clouds that went on to flood Roswell October20th. But with the painting I changed the foreground to be green grassland rather than parked cars, etc. COPYRIGHT 2024 Kay Smith

Old Country Church

5.5x8.5 watercolor on Masters sketchbook 80 lb paper done over the weekend for the WetCanvas All Media Art Event. Artists have a 2 hour time limit to select an image and then paint or draw their choice. If not done then they are to post the unfinished work in progress at the 2 hour mark. I liked the old building all alone with storm clouds brewing above the hayfield. COPYRIGHT Kay Smith 2020.

Krakow Evening

8.5x5 watercolor on Fluid 140 lb cold press paper begun yesterday then finished today as part of another weekend drawing event on WetCanvas.  For the 2 hour time limit, I managed to get it done in about 45 minutes.  With the silhouetted buildings the sky was an opportunity to create some dark, dancing clouds in the fading evening light.

Timeworn Truck

10x15 watercolor, 10 minutes to draw (no pencil) in black India ink then 1 hour approximately to paint an old truck and shack scene in graphic style (bold line, atmospheric, comic book, flat, etc.).  Dark clouds moving in on the scene were laid in first with raw umber violet, raw umber, prussian blue and sap green over lighter underpainting of cobalt ultramarine green.  I kept adding paint to wet washes and hoped for no mud as this was thin Canson paper 140 lb.  Ref featured on this weekend's drawing event on WetCanvas, courtesy Li Newton.
