BURN’s ECOA Char (Jikokoa) is at the centre of new peer-reviewed research from leading economists at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, finding cookstove projects “among the most effective abatement opportunities available in the world today.” Dr. Susanna Berkouwer and Dr. Joshua Dean have published a new study based on their Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) of BURN’s ECOA Char (Jikokoa) involving 955 households in Nairobi. The research examined not only whether households adopted the improved stove, but whether the intervention was genuinely additional, how much charcoal households saved, whether stoves remained in use over time, and the cost-effectiveness of the resulting emissions reductions. According to newly released research BURN’s ECOA Char (Jikokoa) is among the most effective abatement opportunities available in the world today. Peer-reviewed research from leading economists Susanna Berkouwer of the Wharton School and Joshua Dean of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business provides powerful independent evidence of the climate impact of BURN’s ECOA Char (Jikokoa). Drawing on a Randomized Controlled Trial in Nairobi, the study found that BURN’s Tier 4 charcoal cookstove (ECOA Char) delivers approximately 1.7 tonnes of CO₂e in avoided emissions per household per year. With 83% of stoves still in use after 3.5 years, the findings demonstrate not only substantial emissions reductions, but sustained adoption and durability. This research strengthens the case for high-integrity clean cooking carbon projects. For BURN, it comes as we pass 1 million ICVCM CCP-labelled carbon credits sold, a milestone reflecting our continued commitment to high-integrity carbon and measurable climate impact. Established by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM), they set a global standard for high-integrity carbon credits, helping buyers identify credits that represent real, measurable and verifiable climate impact. For eligible clean cooking projects, the requirements include robust monitoring, conservative carbon accounting, including the use of MoFuSS to determine fNRB, alongside other safeguards.   Demand for high-integrity clean cooking projects is growing. Recent market analysis, including Sylvera’s latest report, points to new momentum for the sector, with cookstoves now among the largest categories of retired carbon credits. The direction of corporate climate policy is also shifting: the SBTi’s new framework recognizes high-integrity carbon credits as a potential complement to companies’ own emissions reductions, creating further space for credible projects to support climate action.   This milestone is a big step forward for BURN and for the high integrity voluntary carbon market as a whole. BURN hosted a delegation from Malawi’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change on Wednesday 12 August at its facility in Njuli, near Blantyre. Led by Deputy Minister Hon. Chipiliro Mpinganjira, MP, and Principal Secretary Dr. Misheck Yagontha Munthali, the delegation toured BURN’s operations to see firsthand how local manufacturing and carbon finance are supporting Malawi’s clean cooking and climate ambitions. Since receiving a Letter of Authorisation on 24 September 2024, BURN has distributed 166,235 clean cooking stoves across Malawi and employed 400 people locally, while establishing manufacturing and distribution operations across the country. BURN is currently authorised to generate 3.5 million carbon credits from its Malawi clean cooking activities, with the credits eligible under the international CORSIA scheme. Clean cooking still faces a significant financing gap, with investment needing to rise substantially to achieve universal access (SDG7). With the right structures in place, carbon finance, including through Article 6, can play an important role in mobilising additional private capital. New analysis from the Clean Cooking Alliance highlights the important role of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). All of BURN's markets contain clean cooking transition in their climate commitments to the UNFCCC, but these mostly fall in the conditional section of the NDC. This means clean cooking targets are not yet funded and require international support. Carbon finance can help fill this gap, bringing results-based private capital toward the ~USD 8 billion annual investment needed to reach universal access, with the potential to unlock a significant share of that in African markets where the need is greatest. BURN's ECOA Char (Jikokoa) is at the centre of a new report finding cookstove projects "among the most effective abatement opportunities available in the world today,“ according to peer-reviewed research from the University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania.   Susanna Berkouwer and Joshua Dean have published a new report based on their Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) on BURN's ECOA Char (Jikokoa). They found that BURN's Tier 4 charcoal cookstove abates CO₂ at approximately $7 per tonne of CO₂e making it one of the most cost-effective climate interventions studied to date.   Even under conservative assumptions, the study found: - A single stove avoids approximately 1.7 tonnes of CO₂e per household per year. - 83% of stoves remained in use after 3.5 years, demonstrating long-term durability. - Every dollar spent subsidizing cookstoves reduces 195 times more CO₂e than a dollar spent subsidizing electric vehicles. Years of independent academic research now deliver the strongest confirmation of what BURN's own monitoring has long shown across our Kenya projects, households cut charcoal use by an outstanding 43% on average, with 71–83% of stoves still in active use over time, while several other markets demonstrate even greater fuel savings.   Independent evidence like this not only strengthens confidence in high-integrity clean cooking carbon projects but also positions clean cooking as one of the world's most compelling climate and development solutions.   It also affirms the high standards BURN has consistently upheld across its carbon portfolio.
