einmal in armenisch-geschriebenem Latein,
einmal armenisch-geschriebenem Arabisch

Latin

Armenian Arabic

Arabic

26 habere ‘to have’

–

–

28 [creatus ‘created’]

մախլուխ maxlowx

مخلوق maḫlūq

29 familiaritas ‘familiarity’

–

–

30 geometrica ‘geometry’

–

–

31 arithmetica ‘arithmetic’

–

–

32 horologia ‘(horary) astrology’

–

–

Zeile (25) liegt kein arabischer Begriff zugrunde, sondern mittelpersisch šāyīdagīh ‘Eignung, Angemessenheit, Wert’.

Der arabische Diphthong ay erscheint einmal monophthongiert als ē (2), einmal als ay (5);

einmal erscheint auch ł [ʁ] für ḫ (17);

Die Frikative f, š und h als f (2, 4, 9, 10, 13), š (17, [25]) und h (1, 20, 23);
s und emphatisches ṣ erscheinen ohne Unterschied als s (11; 13, 13*, 17, 24);
die auf die frikative Artikulationsart (z) und den dentalen Artikulationsort (d) hinweist;
– dafür ist mir keine phonetische Grundlage ersichtlich –;

und fehlt nach i in den nisba-Formen vollständig (2, 3, 17);
Der Halbvokal w wird initial ow (7) geschrieben und sonst v (1, 12);
was armenischen Schreibkonventionen zuwiderläuft –
nativ erscheint es ausschließlich nach i.[3: §14]

Das arabische ʔ wird in den armenischen Schreibungen initial nicht ausgedrückt (5, 19);
in anderen Positionen ist es nicht belegt.

Phonotaktik.
der im Armenischen nicht vorkommt;
nach dem Nucleus i erscheint i (8).

Morphologie.

The date was fitting: this semester’s event brought together 15 ancient-language performances around the many forms of love—romantic, divine, tragic, humorous, and metaphysical. The large auditorium once again served as the stage for a wide-ranging, two-hour program that moved easily between languages, genres, and registers.

Vedic Sanskrit, Akkadian, Biblical Hebrew, Ancient Greek, Gothic, Coptic, Syriac, Anglo-Saxon, Tocharian, Classical Arabic, Old Norse, Old Prussian, and Old Lithuanian.

Although the evening coincided with a major football match and steady rain, both of which kept many away, the turnout was still impressive: roughly half the seats were filled. Given the circumstances, it was clear that the event had carved out a space of genuine interest.

The program featured 13 performances that brought several historical languages to life, namely
Proto-Indo-European (in pronunciations reconstructed by the OG August Schleicher, Rosemarie Lühr and Frederik Kortlandt), Akkadian, Vedic, Late Egyptian, Biblical Hebrew, Ancient Greek, Classical Latin, Sanskrit, Old Irish, Manchu, Middle High German, Early New High German, and Old East Slavic.

The bikini takes its name from a Pacific island. The island’s name comes from coconuts. And somehow, that all makes sense.

The two-piece swimsuit debuted in 1946, right as the United States was conducting atomic bomb tests on Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Fashion designer Louis Réard named the garment after the site, calculating (accurately) that it would create as much of a blast in popular culture as the bombs did in the Pacific.

A nuclear test at the Bikini Atoll.

But the name Bikini goes further back. It’s an adaptation from the Marshallese word Pikinni.
Pikinni is made up of: pik ‘surface’, -in (a genitive marker, ‘of’), and ni ‘coconuts’.
So the name means something like ‘surface of coconuts’.

And thus the name bikini—born of an atoll, borrowed by fashion, and placed on proverbial coconuts—wraps back around.
As with the Neanderthal, the name is another neat little ouroboros, in two pieces.

Several solutions exist, utilizing proprietary platforms like
IFTTT or n8n,
some hosted for free by someone else.
There is even a public git archive of popular playlists.

Despite these options,
I’ve chosen to create my own archiver for the following reasons:

I’ve never worked with the Spotify API before.
Taking this opportunity to familiarize myself with it now might prove beneficial for future use.

I’d like to be independent of the continuation of the other solutions,
which are run by strangers in their free time.
My goal is to avoid dependencies that might suddenly vanish from the internet.

I want to decide how things are archived.
This means I want to choose the amount of detail and the data format myself.
Opting for popular formats like JSON in a git repository allows for versatile analysis
using tools like jq or
git log
to track playlist changes.

I’d prefer to be able to decide when and where my data is archived,
ideally keeping the information about which playlists I have and their content private.

Turns out, nowadays, accomplishing tasks like this doesn’t require owning a server to run programs regularly.
If you use GitHub,
even with a free account,
you get a certain amount of GitHub Actions minutes.
This means you can run virtually any software on GitHub’s own machines.

Testing the archiver

Mainly because of reasons 1 and 3,
I’ve decided to take matters into my own hands and write the archiving software myself.
I’ve chosen the TypeScript/JavaScript runtime Deno.
With Deno, I can quickly write and run scripts in an efficient, well-designed, statically-typed language.
Goodbye to the days of using Python for these one-off scripts;
Deno and TypeScript have become my go-to for these things.

You can find my script in this gist.

To use it, create a Spotify app and save its generated client ID in the
SPOTIFY_CLIENT_ID
variable and the client secret in the
SPOTIFY_CLIENT_SECRET
variable.
Finally you have to find out your Spotify user name and save it in the
SPOTIFY_USER_ID
variable.
Assuming you have Deno installed—running my gist is a breeze:

mkdir spotify-playlists && cd spotify-playlists
deno run --allow-read --allow-write --allow-env --allow-net https://gist.githubusercontent.com/kmein/94df54ac477f1b1dad07078ae078b67c/raw/spotify-archive.ts

This generates a JSON file for each playlist in your profile,
neatly organized into subdirectories by playlist creator.
The resulting directory tree might resemble this:

.
├── spotify:user:1148738903
│ └── spotify:playlist:0Zwjm733rLYQmeSQdsgxji.json

}

Running on GitHub actions

Running your own software on GitHub actions is as easy as creating a file
.github/workflows/archive.yml
in your git repository and pushing it to GitHub.
It does not matter whether your remote repository is public or private.

We want to make sure the action runs every day at midnight. This is done using cron syntax.
(The
workflow_dispatch
part enables you to also run the action on button press, not only when it is midnight.
This is especially useful if you want to test the archiver script.)

name: Archive
on:
  schedule:
  - cron: "0 0 * * *"
  workflow_dispatch:

Next, we pass our Spotify app’s client ID and client secret to the action.
Therefore you have to add the secrets to the repository.

env:
  SPOTIFY_CLIENT_SECRET: ${{ secrets.SPOTIFY_CLIENT_SECRET }}
  SPOTIFY_CLIENT_ID: ${{ secrets.SPOTIFY_CLIENT_ID }}

Now, onto the essential part—the
jobs
section of the action:

jobs:
  archive:
    environment: Spotify
    runs-on: ubuntu-latest
    steps:
    - uses: actions/checkout@v2
    - run: 'rm -r spotify* || :'
    - uses: denoland/setup-deno@v1
      with:
        deno-version: v1.x
    - run: deno run --allow-read --allow-write --allow-env --allow-net https://gist.githubusercontent.com/kmein/94df54ac477f1b1dad07078ae078b67c/raw/spotify-archive.ts
      env:
        SPOTIFY_USER_ID: YOUR_SPOTIFY_USERNAME
    - uses: EndBug/add-and-commit@v7
      with:
        default_author: github_actions
        branch: main

The
rm -r
command ensures a clean slate for the archiving process,
removing previously archived playlists from the action’s working directory.
This guarantees that the git repository tracks the deletion of playlists.
Their contents remain archived in the repository’s history.

The
denoland/setup-deno
step sets up a functional Deno environment to run the archiver script from the gist in the next step.
Remember to add your Spotify username under the
env
key.

Lastly, the
EndBug/add-and-commit
step ensures the directory tree created by the archiver is committed and pushed to your repository on the main branch.

This should leave you with a regular and automatic backup of all the Spotify playlists in your profile.
Please let me know if you encounter any trouble.
(You can also comment on the gist, of course.)

If you’re interested in the Coptic language, you’ve likely come across the Coptic Dictionary Online. It’s a collaborative project involving multiple universities, aiming to bring Coptic lexicography into the 21st century. The initiative enriches the work on Egyptian Coptic by Walter Crum, providing crucial information on Greek Coptic from the Database and Dictionary of Greek Loanwords in Coptic project.

While I appreciate the search interface and linked example sentences from the Coptic Scriptorium corpus project, I also value the security and speed of having an offline copy of the data. This guarantees the information’s permanence, unaffected by the ever-changing trends of web technology and design. Unlike online tools that might vanish or degrade over time due to shifting technologies, an offline copy provides a stable and reliable resource that won’t be subject to the whims of digital evolution or funding uncertainties.

Therefore, armed with the powers of XSLT and automatic typesetting, I made the decision to return the entries of the Coptic dictionary to their origins: black letters on white pages.
My usual choice for automatic typesetting would of course be LaTeX.
But looking at the amount of complex Unicode text contained in the data and the sheer amount of entries, I could already hear the whimper of the XeLaTeX compiler being forced to labour for several minutes just to generate a single PDF document.
In light of this, and having heard that there’s a new sheriff in town—faster, more programmable, and exceptionally Unicode-friendly—I opted to give Typst a go.

Typst simplifies the creation of macros for rendering extensive text by eliminating the need for repetitive coding. In contrast to LaTeX or LuaLaTeX, Typst treats common programming concepts such as loops, conditionals, and variables as first-class citizens. Notably, Typst goes a step further by allowing the direct loading of XML or other structured data. To harness this capability, I authored a small XSLT script to extract pertinent information from the TEI XML document provided by the creators of the Coptic Dictionary Online, converting it into an intermediate representation in the Typst macro language. A Typst script then reads this data and efficiently renders it to a PDF. An example of this can be seen in the following screenshot:

Screenshot from the resulting PDF document.

You can find the source code for my scripts in my GitHub repository and the generated PDF documents—one upright, one landscape for full-screen reading—on its releases page.

H. C. Artmann[1: 1]

So weit, so wild.

Also – weiter geht’s.

Elegik: Rainer Maria Rilke

Rainer Maria Rilke

Also, was sagt GPT-3 dazu?

singe, was ich töne.

unser Herz an seinem eignen Schrecken?

Was darauf folgt, die Maskenbälle,

Astrale Lyrik: Paul Celan

Vom
Sternbild des Hundes, vom
Hellstern darin und der Zwerg-
leuchte, die mitwebt
an erdwärts gespiegelten Wegen,

Paul Celan

… kommt nun was, liebes GPT-3?

Vom
Sternbild des Hundes, vom
Hellstern darin und der Zwerg-
leuchte, die mitwebt
an erdwärts gespiegelten Wegen,

kam eine Stimme,
in der eine Frage
schwebte.

Und sie fragte:

Bist du einsam?

Ein literarischer Dauerbrenner: Einsamkeit unter Sternen.
Wenig eigenes,
an Wände gesprüht

sondern liegt tief darunter
fehlen doch zwei wichtige Zeichen komplett.

Dörfer und Städte ||

Alan Turings Dictum
– “a sonnet written by a machine would be better appreciated by another machine” –

The etymologies of the words lock and castle in many languages seem curiously—interlocked.
Despite their seemingly distinct meanings, they share a thread of linguistic history that connects them in a fascinating way. Let’s break it down:

The journey begins in Middle Latin, where we find the word clūsa, which originally referred to a monk’s cell or a narrow valley. This word comes from claudere, meaning ‘to close’ or ‘shut in’. From this, the concept of enclosure, closure, and confinement emerges, leading us to the next stop in our etymological tour.

In Middle High German, this Latin term was calqued (literally translated) into the word sloʒ, which could mean both a ‘fortified building’ or ‘castle’, as well as a ‘lock’ or ‘bolt’. The verb slieʒen, meaning ‘to close’ or ‘shut in’, is clearly tied to both these senses—sealing things off, whether it’s a building or a door.

This same pattern was passed on to the Slavic languages.
In Czech, zámek can mean both ‘castle’ and ‘lock’.
The meaning ‘castle’ is likely calqued from the German sloʒ, while the form meaning ‘lock’ derives from a native root like the verb za-mknout.

Drawing of Orlík castle in Czechia.

Via Polish, this connection traveled eastward, so in Russian, we find two forms of the word замок—one for a ‘castle’, and the other for a ‘lock’ (замо́к).
The two forms differ by stress: the version stressed on the final syllable (замо́к ‘lock’) is the original East Slavic form, while the version with penultimate stress (за́мок ‘castle’) likely came from Polish, where it follows the same stress pattern and has the calqued meaning of ‘castle’.

In each case, the metaphor of something being ‘shut in’, whether it’s a castle or a lock, remains central. The physical idea of securing a space ties these meanings together, creating a link between a secure, enclosed building and the device used to close it.

(Interestingly, English shares some of this entanglement. The word slot—cognate with the German Schloss meaning both ‘lock’ and ‘castle’—is semantically related to German Loch ‘hole, slot’. This connects directly with the English lock, as well as with related terms in other languages, such as French loquet and Italian lucchetto, all of which deal with the concept of closure, fastening, or securing.)

The Circular Etymology of the Neanderthal

Have you ever noticed that etymology the word Neanderthal constitutes an ouroboros?
An etymology that bites its own tail, as it were—here’s how it works.

Neanderthals, often thought of as primitive, were actually a relatively young (or new) species of human.

The name Neanderthal comes from the place where their fossils were discovered: the Neander Valley in Germany. But here’s the twist—this valley is named after Joachim Neander, this 17th-century German theologian:

Joachim Neander

And here’s where it gets interesting: Joachim Neander’s surname is actually a hellenized form of the German Neumann (think “new man”).
In Greek, Νέ-ανδρος (Ne-andros) literally translates to ‘new man’.
This kind of classical makeover was common among scholars and theologians in early modern Germany.
So, Neanderthal essentially means ‘valley of the new man’. Here the snake clamps down. Nomen est omen.
