Invented in 1892 by Sir James Dewar, a scientist at Oxford University, the "vacuum flask" was not manufactured for commercial use until 1904, when two German glass blowers formed Thermos GmbH. They held a contest to name the "vacuum flask" and a resident of Munich submitted "Thermos", which came from the Greek word "Therme" meaning "hot".
Scottish picnic ware. This is even more beautiful if actually used in Scotland!
Vintage plaid thermos
A kid I worked with in college had a plaid thermos like this. He always had it with him, filled with black coffee. One day it fell and broke and he was pretty upset. So of course I had to anonymously buy him a new one on eBay. It's a pretty cool story that I probably would've forgotten all about if I didn't buy my son a thermos recently and just happened to put coffee in it, which rang a bell. Gotta remember the good stories and not just the bad to tell your kids.
