Leonardo Lucio Custode’s personal website
Hello, welcome to my personal website!
I am a Post-Doctoral researcher at the University of Trento, working on Federated Learning and Tiny Machine Learning.
During my PhD, I worked on Interpretable Artificial Intelligence under the supervision of Giovanni Iacca, using methodologies such as: Evolutionary Computation, Reinforcement Learning, Deep Learning, Multi-Agent Systems.
My research interests lie in the fields of machine learning and optimization, with special focus on federated learning, tiny machine learning, interpretability, reinforcement learning, automated code generation and discovery and, in general, artificial intelligence.
In some side projects, I worked on projects related to the application of machine learning algorithms to healthcare and medicine:
- Automatic quality assessment for plexiglass phantoms in radiology
- Semantic segmentation of brain MRI scans for automatic tissue segmentation in paediatric patients, in collaboration with FBK and APSS
- Neuro-symbolic AI for the automatic assessment of lungs’ condition of COVID-19 patients, with the ULTRa research group

In April 2023, I got my PhD degree (cum Laude).
In 2022, I was a Research Intern at the Huawei Ireland Research Center, where I worked on safe reinforcement learning and neuroevolution.
In 2019, I started my PhD at the University of Trento
In 2018 and 2019, I was a Research Intern at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in Lisbon, working on neuroevolution. The outcome of this internship was partially published to EvoApps 2020.
