A solid directorial debut from Oz Perkins, this works thanks to a nice core of originality making up for some of the pacing issues in the first half of the movie. The fractured chronology of events somehow both helps and hinders the overall experience (it helps to spring a couple of surprises, but the surprises lose their impact due to some big signposts). The cast all do well in their roles.
