davidshouse I listened to this album whilst working on some abstract art, involving plant forms. It had a massive influence on the outcome of my art.

Looking forward to hearing more from Lichon.

about

Lichon’s otherworldly debut EP comes just months after their formation in autumn 2024. This exploratory collaboration marks a fresh and humble approach to plant music, merging the sounds of plants, fungi, lichen, rocks and the sea with largely improvised responses on violin, viola, guitar and discarded 80s musical junk.

‘It’s Always About Us’ embraces the secrets of nature and our environment, whilst allowing space for reflection upon humankind’s role and impact. The acoustic ecology (exploring how humans perceive and interact with sound in our environment) encourages a deeper awareness of and more conscious engagement with nature, leading us to discover more about who and what we are.

The field recordings took place in and around Blackchurch Rock, a secluded cove near Hartland, amongst the dramatic rugged North Devon coastline. The visual range of colours, textures, tones and shapes of this unique environment are reflected sonically throughout the EP, with space given to the wider vast landscape as well as more intricate close up patterns.

-------------

1. ‘Black Church Us’ - a soaring meditative track guided by a field recording soundscape of plants, fungi and lichen, interwoven with improvised responses on violin, viola, guitar and synthesisers, all elements merging symbiotically.

2. ‘Black Church Them’ - gives its space wholly to the natural landscape of Blackchurch Rock, biodata taking the fore, a fluid sonic portrait of resilience and transformation in the natural world.

3. ‘Black Church You’ - a largely human-made track, omitting any plant biodata and instead basking upon sounds of the sea, with Alex and Anisa’s playing unintentionally reminiscent of the natural sounds of plants.
