about

"Siin oli soo. Once was mire" is a homage and a sneak peek into the heart of the mire, its stories, its rise and fall; dwelling upon its vibrant surface as well as the secrets hidden in the dark peat.

Writers Penny Boxall (UK) and Maarja Pärtna (EE) started developing the initial idea of "Siin oli soo. Once was mire" in 2023. Back then, they were given the task to create something on the topic of "Bring Your Own Utopia" for Prima Vista Literature Festival 2024. Brainstorming on utopias naturally brought environmental topics to the table, with wetlands as one of the perhaps most obvious landscapes that have been shaped, destroyed and now restored by humans in both of the writers' homelands (as well as globally). Through walks and discussions they immersed themselves in the aura of the Estonian mires (drawing parallels to the Norfolk broads from a distance, a strong representation of wetland utopias in the UK). Out came the writings that you can hear and read as part of this release.

Musician and artist Liis Ring (EE/SE) was later asked to join in with her perspectives and mediums, which resulted in a newly composed soundscape on the texts of Boxall and Pärtna, as well as a pile of handmade paper containing Ring's old letters and school books as well as reeds from Norfolk. Images of this paper have been used for the artwork of this release. "Siin oli soo. Once was mire" premiered as a 10-channel sound installation at Prima Vista Literature Festival in May 2024. The material rested for a year until Liis Ring decided it was too good not to be released and shaped it into the first publication under her new label kajajaja.

We sincerely hope you enjoy it!
