Neutral Items
From Liquipedia Dota 2 Wiki
(Redirected from Artifacts)
Neutral items are craftable items, which require Madstone to be built. Madstone is obtained by farming neutral creeps. They cannot be purchased, and cannot be removed from the dedicated neutral item slot.
Each player may equip only one neutral item at a time, in a dedicated neutral item slot. Crafting a new neutral item replaces the old one.

[edit]Madstone
[edit]Neutral items are crafted with Madstone, which is a resource dropped by neutral creeps.
Obtaining Madstone
[edit]- Madstone is dropped by neutral creeps upon clearing their camp.
- If the killing player is within 1200 of the last dying creep, it automatically flies towards them.
- If the killing player is not within range, but allied heroes are, then it flies towards the closest ally within that range.
- If an enemy hero is also within 800 of the creep, then the Madstone drops as abundle on the ground instead.
- If no heroes are within range, it drops on the ground as well.
- Madstone that dropped on the ground can be picked up by coming within 100 range of it.
| Camp type | Regular | Turbo | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Killing player | Random allies | Killing player | Random allies | |
| Regular Camps | 2 | 1 | 3 | 2 |
| 3 | 2 | 4 | 3 | |
- If the killing player already reached the current Madstone cap, all the Madstone they pick up gets distributed between their allies.
- Note that multiple allies get selected always, each getting one Madstone.
- Casting Transmute on a neutral creep also grants Madstone, as much as clearing a creep camp would do.
- Madstone limits
The amount of Madstone a player can farm at a time is time-limited. This is to prevent players from crafting higher tier items early on.
| Madstone Cap / player (enough for tier) |
Game Time | |
|---|---|---|
| Regular | Turbo | |
| 0 | 00:00 – 04:59 | 00:00 – 02:29 |
| 5 (Tier 1) | 05:00 – 14:59 | 02:30 – 07:29 |
| 15 (Tier 2) | 15:00 – 24:59 | 07:30 – 12:29 |
| 25 (Tier 3) | 25:00 – 34:59 | 12:30 – 17:29 |
| 35 (Tier 4) | 35:00 – 59:59 | 17:30 – 29:59 |
| 45 (Tier 5) | 60:00 – 69:59 | 30:00 – 34:59 |
| ∞ | 70:00+ | 35:00+ |
Crafting
[edit]- Once enough Madstone has been gathered, the player receives an ▶️ audio cue, and the Madstone counter in the HUD starts flashing.
- The audio repeats upon re-selecting the hero.
- Clicking on the counter reveals a list of artifacts and enchantments the player can now choose. The list contains 4/5 random artifacts and 4/5 enchantments depending on your hero's primary attribute.
- On the higher tiers, the artifact list contains the previously chosen artifact + 4 new random artifacts of the current tier, allowing the player to keep the previous one if desired.
- However, since some enchantments exist in multiple tiers (with scaling bonuses), it is possible to get the same enchantment again.
- In order to craft a higher tier, the previous tier must be crafted first.
- Plays an ▶️ audio cue whenever a new neutral item is received.
These are the Madstone requirements for each tier
| Tier | Required | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6 | 6 |
| 2 | 10 | 16 |
| 3 | 10 | 26 |
| 4 | 10 | 36 |
| 5 | 10 | 46 |
Once the Madstone cap is lifted, the player can gather Madstone to re-craft a new tier 5 item. However, the cost of doing so escalates with each re-craft.
| Re-craft count | Required | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | 20 | 66 |
| 2nd | 30 | 96 |
| 3rd | 40 | 136 |
| 4th | 50 | 186 |
| 5th | 60 | 246 |
| ... | ||
- There is no limit to re-crafting tier 5 neutral items.

Trivia
[edit]- The concept of neutral items is likely inspired by the item drop system in Warcraft 3.
- In this games, neutral creeps within camps drop items when slain, based on level and item category.
- The original iteration of neutral items in Dota 2 worked very similar to this, with neutral creeps randomly dropping items when slain.
Old Neutral Item Systems
[edit]Since their release, the way neutral items could be obtained changed multiple times.
Direct Drops
[edit]On release (Version 7.23), neutral items dropped directly from neutral creeps when killed. The tiers were locked to the game time, and had the following chances to drop
| Tier/Time | ||||||

| Tier | 14% | |||||
| Tier | 10% | |||||
| Tier | 10% | |||||

Token System
[edit]Main Article: Neutral Item Token
In version 7.33, the Neutral Item Tokens were introduced. Instead of directly dropping a random neutral item of a tier, neutral creeps would now drop a token instead, using the same chances and time-gating as the previous system.
