- The proc chance is determined during the unit's attack point, and uses
pseudo-random distribution (
+8.47%andP(12) = 100%).
- Chain Lightning can proc on the following units:
Invisible enemies (i.e. instant attacks hitting an invisible enemy).
- Enemies inside the
Fog of War.
- On already dead enemies (i.e. target died before projectile impact).
modifier_maelstrom_chain- This hidden modifier is responsible for the bouncing chain lightning.
- If the wielder dies, all their currently ongoing Chain Lightning instances stop immediately.
- Cannot proc while the wielder is dead either.
- Multiple instances of the buff fully stack.
- Cannot bounce on the following units:
- Enemies it has bounced to already.
- Enemies inside the
- Non-targetable enemies.
Ward-type units.
Buildings.
- Attacks which proc Chain Lightning cannot miss.
Hidden modifier
- Chain Lightning uses pseudo-random distribution.
- The lightning bounces in 0.25-second intervals, hitting 4 targets takes 0.75 seconds.
- All bounces together can deal up to 440 damage (before reductions).
- Against a lone target, Chain Lightning adds an average of 27.5 magical spell damage to every attack.
- Chain Lightning uses a custom cooldown system. It is neither displayed on the item icon when procced nor is affected by cooldown manipulation.

[edit]- Maelstrom is a very good item for speeding up farming. If the extra experience is not needed, it is a good alternative to Hand of Midas.
- It is also great to deal with illusions or mass-summons like Broodmother's spiders, Nature's Prophet's treants, etc. Especially useful for ranged heroes that lack area damage, since they cannot make use of cleave.
- The Chain Lightning deals magical damage which ignores armor and Damage Block, making it good against heroes that get a Vanguard, or Tidehunter with his Kraken Shell, and against heroes with high armor like Dragon Knight or Terrorblade.
- Maelstrom is a useful pickup against mega creeps in order to help clear waves.

Trivia
[edit]- A Maelstrom is a dangerous weather phenomenon that creates violent whirlpools or even vortexes at sea, often caused by strong ocean currents and conflicting tides in combination with the topography of the sea floor, which can persist for centuries. Coined by the Dutch in the 17th century, Maelstrom literally translates to "grinding stream"
- In Deadlock, the Tesla Bullets item may be inspired by Maelstrom, both granting attacks a chance to release a lightning bolt that jumps towards other enemies around the attack target.
- Like Maelstrom with Mjollnir, Tesla Bullets upgrades as well, upgrading into the Capacitor, with a stronger version of the same passive.
- However, its active is similar to that of Diffusal Blade instead, placing a decaying slow on a target which – just like Diffusal Blade – used to also dispel the target.
