The Tormentor is a powerful neutral creep boss that, unlike other neutral creeps, is incapable of moving or attacking. Despite this, it is difficult to take down due to its quickly regenerating barrier, its very potent damage reflection, and passive area burn that deals damage per second. Also, it grows stronger as time passes.

Defeating the Tormentor rewards one hero of the slaying team with an Aghanim's Shard, as well as with a team gold bounty.

The Tormentor spawn points are located at the north-west and south-east corners of the map, on lower ground with 3 ramps leading up, along with Twin Gates not far in front of them. A Watcher is located right at the middle ramps.

The spawn points are a hole in the ground that is covered by a lens-shutter mechanic that only opens when the Tormentor spawns. These gates are visible through the Fog of War, and reveal where the Tormentor currently is. A local audio plays as the gate ▶️ opens and ▶️ closes, which is audible through the fog of war.


During Daytime daytime, the Tormentor will be at the south-east corner on Faction Radiant's side, while at Nighttime nighttime, it will be at the north-west corner on Faction Dire's side. Whenever the day time switches, the Tormentor actively moves the corresponding location. This ignores artifical daytimes and nighttimes created by abilities.

Spawning and Respawning

The Tormentor initially spawns at the 20:00 minute mark (10:00 in Turbo Mode), and then respawns 10 minutes after being killed (5 minutes in Turbo Mode). Its respawn cannot be blocked.

Kill Rewards

When a Tormentor is killed, one of the two lowest net worth players within that team who do not already have Aghanim's Shard is granted an Aghanim's Shard for free. This gets announced in all chat. The Aghanim's Shard is instantly applied and does not need to be activated, it does not appear as an item in the player's inventory. When selecting the Tormentor, the Aghanim's Shard is visible in its inventory. Spirit Bear can also be granted the Aghanim's Shard.

The player that received the Aghanim's Shard will not receive the 175 Gold team gold bounty. Once all players have an Aghanim's Shard, all players of the team gain 415 Gold each. The Tormentor does not grant any experience.

Trivia

  • Since it is not a structure but a creep, it can be hexed. When hexed, unlike Roshan, it turns into a small, creep sized critter and the gate underneath it temporarily closes until hex expires.
  • Monkey King can transform to Tormentor with Mischief. The transformed Monkey King will also cause the gate underneath him to open.
  • The model and textures of the Tormentor are all named "Divine Sentinel", which probably was an early name for the Tormentor during development.
    • It is also just refered to as "miniboss" within several other files.
